The Church of England’s Convocation of Canterbury initiated this revision of the King James Bible in 1870. British committees, with assistance from American scholars, sought greater accuracy using manuscript evidence and advances in Hebrew and Greek scholarship while preserving the older version’s style. The New Testament appeared in 1881, the Old Testament in 1885, and the Apocrypha in 1895. The American participants’ continuing work subsequently produced the American Standard Version of 1901.
