λίμνη

Strong’s: G3041

Associated OET lemmas: λίμνη

Form 1

Part of speech: noun, f.

Inflections: λίμνη; -ης

Sense 1: lake, pool

Semantic entry: 1.72

Semantic domains: Geographical Objects and Features

Subdomains: Bodies of Water

Definition: a relatively small body of water either natural or artificial, surrounded by land

Notes: The use of λίμνη to refer to the Lake of Galilee (also called the Lake of Gennesaret) normally poses no special difficulty, but in the expression ‘lake of fire’ (RV REV 20:10 · LV REV 20:10 · Read together REV 20:10) there are complications, as already noted in 1.22: λίμνη.

Sense 2: lake of fire, hell

Semantic entry: 1.22

Semantic domains: Geographical Objects and Features

Subdomains: Regions Below the Surface of the Earth

Definition: (an idiom, literally: lake of fire (and sulfur), occurring in some slightly different forms six times in Revelation, three times with the addition of θεῖον ‘sulfur’) a place of eternal punishment and destruction{N:001}

Notes: In a number of languages it is impossible to translate literally ‘lake of fire,’ since water and fire seem to be so contradictory that a lake of fire is not even imaginable. It may be possible in some instances to speak of ‘a place that looks like a lake that is on fire,’ but in other languages the closest equivalent may simply be ‘a great expanse of fire.’ In some parts of the world people are fully familiar with the type of boiling magma in the cone of volcanoes, and terms for such a place may be readily adapted in speaking of ‘a lake of fire,’ since volcanic activity would seem to be the basis for this particular biblical expression.
