At first, ζύμη must be understood in the literal sense (as in Domain 5), yet ζύμη in verse 7 refers to wrong behavior. It is important, however, to try to preserve the continuity of the figurative reference, and for that reason the phrase παλαιὰ ζύμη is sometimes translated as ‘the old yeast of sin.’ It is difficult to know to what extent there may be a reference at this point to the hypocrisy which accompanies legalistic behavior.
