OET (OET-LV)And he_began to_be_teaching them that it_is_fitting the son of_ the _man to_suffer many things, and to_be_rejected by the elders and the chief_priests and the scribes, and to_be_killed_off, and to_rise_up after three days.

OET (OET-RV) Then Yeshua began teaching his followers that humanity’s child would need to suffer a lot, to be rejected by the religious leaders, and so to be put to death but to come back to life after three days.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

αὐτοὺς ὅτι δεῖ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου πολλὰ παθεῖν, καὶ ἀποδοκιμασθῆναι ὑπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ τῶν γραμματέων, καὶ ἀποκτανθῆναι, καὶ μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἀναστῆναι

them that ˱it˲_/is/_fitting the Son ¬the ˱of˲_Man many_‹things› /to/_suffer and /to_be/_rejected by the elders and the chief_priests and the scribes and /to_be/_killed_off and after three days /to/_rise_up

It may be more natural in your language to have a direct quotation here. Alternate translation: “them, ‘It is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and to be killed and to rise up after three days’”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου

the Son ¬the ˱of˲_Man

Here Jesus is referring to himself as the Son of Man. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “him, who is the Son of Man,”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἀποδοκιμασθῆναι ὑπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ τῶν γραμματέων

/to_be/_rejected by the elders and the chief_priests and the scribes

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “to experience rejection from the elders and the chief priests and the scribes”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἀποκτανθῆναι

/to_be/_killed_off

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, you could use an indefinite subject. Alternate translation: “to die” or “to allow someone to kill him”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἀναστῆναι

/to/_rise_up

Here, the phrase rise up refers to someone who died coming back to life. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable word or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “to be restored to life” or “to resurrect”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας

after three days

Here, the phrase after three days refers to the day after tomorrow. People in Jesus’ culture counted the current day as day one, tomorrow as day two, and the day after tomorrow as day three. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that refers to the day after tomorrow. Alternate translation: “on the day after the next day” or “two days from now”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:31 It was a divine necessity that Jesus must suffer (see also 9:11; 13:7, 10). The immediate cause for Jesus’ suffering was the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law (see 10:33; 11:18, 27; 14:1, 43, 53), but the ultimate cause was the will of God.
• Jesus’ death would not be the end, for three days later he would rise from the dead.
• Three days later is a synonym for on the third day (Matt 16:21; Luke 9:22) and after three days and three nights (Matt 12:40).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and English gloss (7th line) are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
