23 Once he got there, he settled into the town of Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: “He’ll be called a Nazarene.”[fn][ref]
2:23 This is not a specific quote from the Hebrew Scriptures, but note that Matthew does say ‘the prophets’ (not ‘the prophet’). This could be: ¹A play on Hebrew ‘נצר’ from Yeshayah (Isaiah) 11:1 where ‘branch/shoot’ (netser) is similar to ‘Natsaret’ (Nazareth/natsrat), ²a play on Shimshon (Samson) the ‘Nazirite’ (נְזִיר) from Heroes (Judges) 13:5,7, or ³just a slur on Yeshua being from insignificant Nazareth as per Yohan (John) 1:46.
