2:1 Yeshua’s birth in Bethlehem

(Mat. 1:18-25)

2At that time, Caesar Augustus sent a decree that everyone throughout the empire needed to register in a census. 2(This census was conducted when Quirinius was the governor of Syria.) 3Everyone had to officially register in the city where they were born.

4Because Yosef was a descendant of King David, he left the town of Nazareth in the Galilee region and went down to David’s town of Bethlehem in Yudea 5to register along with Maria, his pregnant fiancée. 6While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to give birth 7and so Maria bore her first son and wrapped him in strips of cloth and slept him in an empty feeding trough, because they had missed out on the guest room.

2And it_became in the those days, a_decree came_out from Kaisar Augustus/(Sebastos), all the inhabited_world to_be_registering.
2(This registration first became when_ Kuraʸnios _governing the Suria/(ʼArām).
)
3And all were_going to_be_registering, each to the city of_himself.
4And Yōsaʸf/(Yōşēf) went_up also, from the Galilaia/(Gālīl) out_of the_city of_Nazaret, to the Youdaia to the_city of_Dawid/(Dāvid), which is_being_called Baʸthleʼem/(Bēyt-leḩem), because_of that him to_be from the_household and family of_Dawid, 5to_register with Maria/(Miryām), which having_been_betrothed to_him, being pregnant.
6And it_became at the time them to_be there, were_fulfilled the days of_the child her to_bear.
7And she_bore the son of_her the firstborn, and swaddled him, and laid him in a_manger, because was not a_place for_them in the guest_room.

2:8 The shepherds and the messengers

8In that same area, there were some shepherds staying out in the fields where they kept watch over their flocks at night. 9A messenger sent by the master approached them, and the master’s radiance shone around them, and they were very frightened. 10“Don’t be scared,” the messenger told them, “because I’m bringing you a good message that will bring great happiness to all people 11because a saviour for all people was born today in David’s town. He’s the messiah—the master 12and this is how you’ll know him: you’ll find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and sleeping in a feeding trough.”

13Then suddenly lots of heavenly soldiers joined the messenger, praising God and saying, 14“Let all honour be given to God in the highest, and peace on earth to all people along with good will.”

15Then as the messengers left them and went up into the sky, the shepherds said to each other, “Well, we’ll certainly go into Bethlehem so we can see what this was about that Yahweh has let us know about.”

16So they hurried into town and asked around to find Maria and Yosef, and also the baby sleeping in the feeding trough. 17When they met them, the explained what they’d been told about the young baby. 18Everyone who heard this was amazed at what the shepherds told them, 19but Maria treasured all of these messages in her heart and often thought about them. 20Finally the shepherds returned back to their fields—they were worshipping and praising God for what they’d heard and how they’d seen it exactly like they’d been told.

8And shepherds were in the the same region, lodging_in_the_fields and keeping watch the by_night over the flock of_them.
9And an_messenger of_the_master approached to_them, and the_glory of_the_master shined_around them, and they_were_afraid with_ great _fear.
10And the messenger said to_them:
Be_ not _fearing, because/for see, I_am_good_message_preaching to_you_all great joy, which will_be to_all the people,
11because today a_saviour was_born to_you_all, who is the_chosen_one/messiah, the_master, in the_city of_Dawid.
12And this is the sign to_you_all:
you_all_will_be_finding a_baby having_been_swaddled, and lying in a_manger.
13And suddenly a_multitude of_the_ heavenly _army became with the messenger, praising the god and saying, 14Glory to_god in the_highest, and peace on earth among humans with_good_pleasure.
15And it_became as the messengers went_away from them into the heaven, the shepherds were_saying to one_another:
We_may_ indeed _pass_through as_far_as Baʸthleʼem/(Bēyt-leḩem), and we_may_see the message this the thing having_become, which the master made_known to_us.
16And came having_hurried, and sought_out the both Maria/(Miryām) and the Yōsaʸf/(Yōşēf), and the baby, lying in the manger.
17And having_seen, they_made_known concerning the saying which having_been_spoken to_them, concerning the this little_child.
18And all the ones having_heard, marvelled concerning the things having_been_spoken by the shepherds to them.
19But the Maria was_treasuring all the these messages, considering them in the heart of_her.
20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising the god for all things which they_heard and saw, as was_spoken to them.

2:21 The child is named Yeshua

21[ref]When the baby was eight days old and hence the time for his circumcision, he was given the name Yeshua as instructed by God’s messenger even before he was conceived in the womb.

21And when eight days were_fulfilled which to_circumcise him, also the name of_him was_called Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa), which having_been_called by the messenger before the time him to_be_conceived in the womb.

2:22 Yeshua is dedicated in the temple

22Then when the time of the mother’s purification was fulfilled as per Mosheh’s instructions, they took him down to Yerushalem to be dedicated to Yahweh 23[ref]to follow what is written in Yahweh’s law: Every firstborn male is set aside for Yahweh 24[ref]and hence a sacrifice has to be made, which according to that law is a pair of turtledoves or a pair of young doves.

25Now listen, there was a man named Simeon in Yerushalem and he was godly and committed, waiting for God to rescue Israel. He was full of the holy spirit 26and the spirit had told him that he wouldn’t die without seeing Yahweh’s messiah. 27He had come to the temple listening to the spirit at just the same time as the parents brought in the baby Yeshua in order to follow the rituals for new parents. 28Simeon took the baby into his arms and blessed God and said, 29“Now, Yahweh, you can send your slave away in peace as you promised 30because I’ve set my eyes on your salvation 31which you have prepared in front of everyone: 32[ref]a light so the non-Jews can understand, and the greatest gift from and for your people of Israel.”

33The baby’s parents were amazed at the things being spoken about him, 34and Simeon blessed them and said to Maria, “Listen, this boy has been chosen to cause both the rise and the fall of many people in Israel, and sent as a sign but one which many people will oppose. 35Also even as you experience incredible grief in the future, it will allow the thoughts of many hearts to be revealed.”

36Also there, was a prophetess named Hanna (the daughter of Fanuel from the tribe of Asher). She was very elderly, having been married for seven years 37and then had been widowed for eighty-four years. She was always at the temple, serving night and day in prayer and fasting. 38She also approached the baby around the same time, and praised God and spoke about the boy to everyone in Yerushalem who was waiting for God to free them.

22And when the days of_the purification of_them according_to the law of_Mōsaʸs/(Mosheh) were_fulfilled, they_brought_ him _up to Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim) to_present to_the master, 23as it_has_been_written in the_law of_the_master, that Every male opening_up a_womb, will_be_being_called holy to_the master, 24and which to_give a_sacrifice, according_to the message having_been_said in the law of_the_master:
A_pair two of_turtledoves or young of_doves.
25And see, a_man was in Hierousalaʸm, whose name was Sumeōn/(Shimˊōn), and the this_ man _was righteous and devout, waiting_for the_comfort of_ the _Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl), and the_ holy _spirit was on him.
26And was having_been_revealed to_him by the the holy spirit, to_ not _see death before wishfully he_may_see the chosen_one/messiah of_the_master.
27And he_came in the spirit into the temple, and at the time the parents to_bring_in, the little_child Yaʸsous, them to_do of_the thing according_to the thing having_been_accustomed by_the law for him, 28and he received him into the arms, and blessed the god and said, 29Now you_are_sending_away the slave of_you, master, in peace according_to the message of_you, 30because the eyes of_me saw the salvation of_you, 31which you_prepared in the_face of_all the peoples, 32a_light for revelation of_the_pagans and glory of_the_people of_you, Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl).
33And the father of_him and the mother was marvelling at the things being_spoken concerning him.
34And Sumeōn blessed them, and said to Maria/(Miryām) the mother of_him:
Behold, this one is_appointing for the_fall and the_resurrection of_many in the Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl), and for a_sign being_spoken_against,
35also a_sword will_be_passing_through the soul of_you of_yourself, so_that the_speculations wishfully of many hearts may_be_revealed.
36And Hanna was a_prophetess, daughter of_Fanouaʸl, of the_tribe of_Asaʸr/(ʼĀshēr), this woman having_advanced in great days, having_lived with a_husband seven years from the virginity of_her, 37and she was a_widow until eighty four years, who not was_withdrawing from_the temple, with_fastings and petitions serving night and day.
38And to_the_same the hour she_having_approached, was_giving_praise the to_god, and was_speaking concerning him, to_all the ones waiting_for the_redemption in_Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim).

2:39 Their return home to Nazareth

39[ref]When they had done all the rituals according to Yahweh’s instructions, they returned to their home town of Nazareth up in Galilee. 40The young boy grew and got stronger, and started showing amazing wisdom and it was clear that God was blessing him.

39And when they_accomplished all the things according_to the law of_the_master, they_returned to the Galilaia/(Gālīl), to Nazaret the_city of_themselves.
40And the little_child was_growing and was_being_strengthened, being_filled with_wisdom, and the_grace of_god was on him.

2:41 Young Yeshua is found in the temple

41[ref]Every year Yeshua’s family would go down to Yerushalem for the Passover celebrations. 42One time when he was twelve years old, they went to celebrate the Passover there as usual, 43and when it was all over and they started on their return, the lad stayed there in Yerushalem but his parents weren’t aware of it. 44They thought he was with others in the group, but at the end of the day’s hiking when they looked for him among the relatives and acquaintances, 45they couldn’t find him, so they returned to Yerushalem to look for him. 46It was only after three days that they found him in the temple, sitting with the religious teachers there—sometimes listening to them, and sometimes asking them questions. 47Everyone who had heard the conversations was amazed at his intelligence and knowledge. 48When his parents found him, they were astonished and his mother asked, “Son, how could you do this to us? Your father and I have been frantic looking for you!”

49“Why did you all need to look for me?” he answered. “Didn’t you both know that it’s good for me to be in my father’s house?” 50But they didn’t really understand what he meant.

51After that, he went back to Nazareth with them and continued to be obedient to them, 52[ref]and so Yeshua continued to grow wiser and taller, and in favour with both God and the people.

41And the parents of_him were_going to Hierousalaʸm in_every year to_the feast of_the passover_feast.
42And when he_became of_ twelve _years, them going_up according_to the custom of_the feast, 43and having_completed the days, in the time them to_be_returning, the boy Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) remained, in Hierousalaʸm, but the parents of_him not.
knew.
44But having_thought him to_be in the caravan, they_came the_journey of_a_day and they_were_seeking_ him _out among the relatives and the acquaintances, 45and not having_found him, they_returned to Hierousalaʸm, seeking_ him _out.
46And it_became after three days, they_found him in the temple, sitting in the_midst of_the teachers, both hearing from_them and asking them.
47And all the ones hearing from_him were_marvelling at the intelligence and the answers of_him.
48And having_seen him, they_were_astonished and the mother of_him said to him:
Child, why did_you thus to_us?
Behold, the father of_you and_I, being_distressed were_seeking you.
49And he_said to them:
Why is_it that you_all_were_seeking me?
You_all_had_ not _known that in the house of_the father of_me it_is_fitting me to_be?
50And they not understood the message which he_spoke to_them.
51And he_came_down with them and came to Nazaret, and was being_subjected to_them.
And the mother of_him was_keeping all the messages in the heart of_her.
