SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:21–40: The baby Jesus at the temple

The events in this section happened some days after Jesus was born.

In 2:21–24, Luke mentioned three ceremonies that were done when Jewish boys were born:

  1. the baby boy was circumcised;

  2. the mother was ritually purified;

  3. the baby boy was presented to God.

In 2:25–38 Luke described two other events that happened while Joseph, Mary, and Jesus were at the temple in Jerusalem. God allowed two righteous people named Simeon and Anna to see Jesus and to thank God for him. Simeon spoke a prophecy about Jesus and Mary.

In 2:39–40 Luke concluded the section. Joseph and Mary took Jesus back to their home in Nazareth, where he grew and became strong and wise. The Gospel of Matthew indicates that before they went to Nazareth, Joseph and Mary took Jesus to Egypt and stayed there for some time. Although Luke does not mention this, you should connect the clauses in 2:39 in a way that does not contradict it.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus’ Parents Obey Moses’ Teachings (GW)

Jesus Presented at the Temple (NASB)

Some English versions begin new sections at 2:25 and at 2:36. If you decide to do this in your translation, some possible headings are:

Simeon saw Jesus and prophesied about him (2:25)

Anna thanked God for Jesus and told others about him (2:36)

Simeon’s Prophecy (2:25)

Anna’s Prophecy (2:36)

2:39

When Jesus’ parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth: The Gospel of Matthew indicates that Joseph and Mary went to Egypt before they returned to Nazareth. Translate this verse in a way that fits with that information. For example:

After Joseph and Mary had done everything…they returned to Galilee to the town of Nazareth where they had lived earlier.

2:39a

When Jesus’ parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord,

When Jesus’ parents had done everything required by the Law of the Lord: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as everything required by the Law of the Lord is literally “everything according to the law of the Lord” (as in the RSV). This includes all the things that Jewish parents did when they had a newborn child, based on the Lord’s Law. They completed all of the following ceremonies:

  1. they had the baby circumcised and named at home;

  2. they presented the baby Jesus at the temple (because he was a firstborn male);

  3. and they gave the sacrifice for the purification of Mary.

Some other ways to translate this part of the verse are:

After they had finished doing all these necessary things, just as the Law of the Lord teaches

When Jesus’ parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord (NLT)

In some languages, it may be clearer to make this clause a complete sentence. For example:

Joseph and Mary finished doing everything that the Law of the Lord commanded.

everything: The word everything refers here to the things that were listed in the first note on this part of the verse. These things related specifically to what parents did after the birth of their son if he was a first child. It does not refer to the many other types of laws and sacrifices that the Law of the Lord mentions. In some languages, it may be necessary to translate this with a more specific phrase. For example:

all the things that the Law of the Lord required new parents to do

the Law of the Lord: The Law of the Lord refers to the Law that God gave to the Israelites through Moses.

2:39b

they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.

they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth: Joseph and Mary returned with Jesus to Nazareth, where they had been living. In 2:4 Joseph and Mary left Nazareth to come to Bethlehem for the census. In this context the phrase their own town does not refer to the home of their ancestors, which was Bethlehem. Use a general term in your language.

Galilee: Galilee was the name of a province/district of the Roman Empire. It was located in the northern part of what is currently the nation of Israel.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

πάντα τὰ κατὰ τὸν νόμον Κυρίου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὡς ἐτέλεσαν παντᾶ τά κατά τόν νόμον Κυρίου ἐπέστρεψαν εἰς τήν Γαλιλαίαν εἰς πόλιν ἑαυτῶν Ναζαρέτ)

Alternate translation: [everything that the law of the Lord required them to do]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

εἰς πόλιν ἑαυτῶν Ναζαρέτ

to to ˓the˒_city ˱of˲_themselves Nazareth

This expression means that they lived in Nazareth. Alternate translation: [the town of Nazareth, where they lived]
