Section 1:67–80: Zechariah prophesied and praised God

In this section the Holy Spirit gave Zechariah insight, and Zechariah spoke the message in 1:68–79. Some scholars call the message a song because it praises God and is similar to some of the psalms, which people often sang. In the message, Zechariah praised God for keeping his promises by sending the Messiah, who would deliver Israel (1:68–75). He also prophesied that his son, John, would prepare people for the Messiah (1:76–79). John grew up (1:80) and fulfilled this prophecy.

Many verbs in 1:68–79 are in the past tense. But Zechariah was not talking only about the past. He talked about what God was doing at that time and what he would continue to do through the Messiah and through John. If possible, use verb forms that do not refer only to past events.

The phrases in Zechariah’s prophecy are similar to phrases in the Old Testament Scriptures. Almost every clause is similar to a verse in the Old Testament. However, none are so similar that it is clear that Zechariah is quoting a certain verse. You may want to include cross-references to some of the similar verses. They will be mentioned in the Notes.

For your translation of 1:68–79, you may want to write the clauses of this song on separate lines, as poetry. For an example, see 1:68–79 in the BSB, NIV, or GNT. In Greek, 1:68–79 is phrased as two long sentences. Most modern English versions use more and shorter sentences. The Notes will give suggestions about sentence breaks. Remember that there may be special phrases in your language that are appropriate for poetry, even if they are not used in ordinary conversation.

In this section Zechariah did not speak about events in the order in which they happened. In some languages it may be necessary to change the order of the clauses to make the sequence of events clear. For example, here is a possible way to begin this section in some languages:

In this verse Luke gave a summary statement about John’s childhood and youth. Your translation should indicate clearly that 1:80 returns to Luke’s account of events. It is not something that Zechariah said.

And the child grew and became strong in spirit;

¶ The child, John, grew up and his spirit became strong/mature.
¶ The boy grew up and became a man and became confident and mature in character.

And the child grew: The word child refers to John. He grew up and became a man.

became strong in spirit: The phrase became strong in spirit is literally “was being strengthened in spirit.” It means that as John grew, he became confident, courageous, and mature in his thinking and character.

and he lived in the wilderness until the time of his public appearance to Israel.

He lived in uninhabited areas until he began his public ministry/work to the people of Israel.
He lived in a desolate region when he matured. Then the time came when he began to preach to the people of Israel.

he lived in the wilderness until the time of his public appearance to Israel: John lived in the wilderness until the time when he began to preach publicly to the Israelites. He also continued to live in the wilderness while he was preaching to them. Translate in a way that will not imply that John stopped living in the wilderness after he began to preach publicly.

Another way to translate this is:

He lived in uninhabited areas when he grew up. Then he began to preach publicly to the people of Israel.

he lived in the wilderness: The word wilderness refers to a wild, desolate area where few people lived. It was often dry in this area, and so many English versions translate this word as “desert.” However, the focus of the word is that few people lived there, not that it was dry.

Other ways to translate this are:

he lived in a desolate area

he lived in an area where few people lived

the time of his public appearance to Israel: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as his public appearance refers to the time when John began to preach to the people of Israel. Great crowds of people then saw him and listened to him.
