21 The message that came from the Eternal to Jeremiah, when king Zedekiah sent Pashhur the son of Malchiah and Zephanlah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, 2 to ask him, “Pray consult the Eternal on our behalf, for Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon is making war on us; perhaps the Eternal will work a miracle for us, as he has often done, and force the man to retreat.” 3 But Jeremiah said to them, “Tell Zedekiah that 4 this is the reply of the Eternal, the God of Israel: ‘The weapons you are using to fight the king of Babylon and your Chaldean besiegers outside the city, I will render useless, forcing you back inside the city, 5 where I myself will fight you with might and main, in anger, fury, and fierce wrath; 6 I will strike down the citizens of this city, and beasts as well as men shall die of a great pestilence. 7 Then (the Eternal declares) Zedekiah king of Judah, with his officers, and with any citizens who survive the pestilence, the sword, and the famine, I will hand over to the enemy and to those who would destroy them, till they are killed without quarter, without pity, not one spared.’ ” 8 “Also,” said the Eternal, “tell this people that the Eternal’s message is: ‘Here I put before you the way of life and the way of death; 9 anyone who stays in the city shall die by the sword, by famine, or by pestilence; but anyone who leaves and surrenders to your Chaldean besiegers shall live, he shall escape with his life. 10 For I have determined evil and not good for this city; it shall be handed over to the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it up.
