The exact referent of אַגֻדָּה here has been under discussion. According to Shalom Paul, it refers to "the tightly fitted vault of heaven otherwise called רָקִיעַ or חוּג." Andersen and Freedman analyse the meaning of the word at length, and suggest the translation "its structures", considering the suffix as referring to מַעַלֹותֹו . The image would be of God's sanctuary with one part in heaven and the other on earth. Semantically, the question is whether אַגֻדָּה means a foundation of a building or its upper part.
