18:16 Abraham bargains with Yahweh about Sodom

16Then the three men got up to leave and looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to see them off. 17Then Yahweh said to himself, “Should I hide what I’m about to do from Abraham? 18His descendants are certainly going to become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him and them, 19because I’m aware that he’ll command his children and his househouse after him, and they’ll follow Yahweh’s path by their right and just behaviour, so that Yahweh will bring about for Abraham what he’s said to him.”

20Then Yahweh said, “Because there’s so many people crying out about Sodom and Gomorrah, and because their sin is very grievous, 21I’ll go down there now and see if what I’ve heard about them is true, and if not, I’ll also find that out.”

22Then the other two men left and starting descending toward Sodom, and Abraham was still standing there in front of Yahweh, 23so he went closer to Yahweh and asked, “Will you really destroy obedient people along with those who’re evil? 24What if there were fifty people in the city who’ve obeyed you? Would you really destroy the city and all its people and not save it for the sake of those fifty? 25Surely you wouldn’t do anything like that—killing the good people along with the evil ones, so that they all just get treated the same? Certainly you wouldn’t do that? Wouldn’t the one who judges the entire world be more fair?”

26“If I find fifty godly people in Sodom,” Yahweh answered, “then I’ll spare the whole city for their sake.”

27“Listen, I’ve been bold enough to question my master, even though I’m just dust and ashes,” Abraham said again. 28“Suppose they’re five short of the fifty? Would you destroy the whole city because of five?”

“I won’t destroy it if I find forty-five there,” he replied.

29Abraham continued to make his request, “Suppose there’s forty there?”

“I won’t do it for the sake of the forty,” he agreed.

30My master, don’t get angry but let me speak,” Abraham said, “suppose thirty are found there?”

“I won’t do it if I find thirty-five there,” he said.

31“Listen, I’ve taken it upon myself to speak to my master,” Abraham asked again, “suppose twenty are found there?”

“I won’t do it for the sake of the twenty,” he agreed.

32“My master, don’t get angry and let me speak one last time,” Abraham added, “suppose ten are found there?”

“I won’t do it for the sake of the ten,” Yahweh conceded 33and then he left and Abraham returned home.

16And_set_out from_there the_men and_looked_down on the_face of_Şədom and_ʼAvərāhām [was]_walking with_them to_set_them.
17And_LORD he_said hide [will]_I from_ʼAvərāhām [that]_which I [am]_about_to_do.
18And_ʼAvərāhām surely_(become) he_will_become to_(a)_nation great and_mighty and_they_will_be_blessed in_him/it all the_nations the_earth/land.
19DOM chosen_him so_that that he_may_command DOM children_his and_DOM household_his after_him and_keep the_way of_Yahweh for_doing righteousness and_justice so_that will_bring Yahweh on ʼAvərāhām DOM [that]_which he_has_spoken on/upon/above_him/it.
20And_he/it_said Yahweh the_outcry of_Şədom and_Amorah DOM it_is_great and_sin_their DOM it_is_heavy exceedingly.
21I_will_go_down please and_see if_according_to_outcry_its the_come to_me have_they_done completely and_if not I_will_know.
22And_turned from_there the_men and_went towards_Sedom and_ʼAvərāhām remained_him [was]_standing to_(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before Yahweh.
23And_came_near ʼAvərāhām and_said indeed will_you_sweep_away [the]_righteous with [the]_wicked.
24Perhaps there_[are] fifty righteous_[people] in_the_middle the_city really will_you_sweep_[it]_away and_not will_you_forgive to_the_place for_the_sake_of fifty the_righteous who in/on/at/with_midst_it.

26And_he/it_said Yahweh if I_will_find in/on/at/with_Şədom fifty righteous_[people] in_the_middle the_city and_spare to/from_all/each/any/every the_place in/on/at/with_sake_their.
27And_answered ʼAvərāhām and_said here please I_have_undertaken to_speak to my_master/master and_I [am]_dust and_ashes.
28Perhaps lacking fifty the_righteous five destroy in/on/at/with_five DOM all the_city and_he/it_said not I_will_destroy_[it] if I_will_find there forty and_five.
29And_he_repeated again to_spoke to_him/it and_said perhaps found there forty and_he/it_said not I_will_do_[it] in_account_of the_forty.
30And_he/it_said not please let_it_burn to_master_my and_speak perhaps found there thirty and_he/it_said not I_will_do_[it] if I_will_find there thirty.
31And_he/it_said here please I_have_undertaken to_speak to my_master/master perhaps found there twenty and_he/it_said not I_will_destroy_[it] in_account_of the_twenty.
32And_he/it_said not please let_it_burn to_master_my and_speak only the_time//this_time perhaps found there ten and_he/it_said not I_will_destroy_[it] in_account_of the_ten.
33And_he/it_went Yahweh just_as he_had_finished to_speaking to ʼAvərāhām and_ʼAvərāhām he_returned to_place_his.
