Satan Bound for a Thousand Years

20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the abyss and a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, [fn]the deceiver of the whole world, and he bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the abyss and [fn]locked and sealed it over him, so that he would [fn]no longer deceive the nations until [fn]the thousand years were completed. After that he must be released for a short time.

4 Then I saw thrones, and those who sat on them were given authority to judge. I also saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received the mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for [fn]the thousand years. 5 [fn](The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed.) This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who take part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for [fn]a thousand years.
