πῦρ

Strong’s: G4442

Associated OET lemmas: πῦρ

Form 1

Part of speech: noun, n.

Inflections: πῦρ; -ός

Related lemmas: πυρόομαι

Sense 1: fire

Semantic entry: 2.3

Semantic domains: Natural Substances

Subdomains: Fire

Definition: the light, flames, and heat produced by the burning of materials

Notes: Though the ancient view of the elements would lead to classification of this occurrence of πῦρ (RV PE2 3:7 · LV PE2 3:7 · Read together PE2 3:7) as referring to a natural substance, the fact that the reference is to a particular event means that in many languages one must speak of a ‘burning,’ and this must be expressed frequently by a verb or participle rather than by a noun, for example, ‘for destruction by being burned up.’

11 I’m immersing people in water as a sign that they’re turning away from their sins, but there’s another one coming after me who’s greater than me—so much so that I’m not even worthy to carry his sandals. He’ll immerse you in the holy spirit and with fire.

OET-LV MAT 3:12

12 Of_whom the winnowing_fork is in the hand of_him, and he_will_be_clearing_out the threshing_floor of_him, and will_be_gathering_together the wheat of_him into the barn, but the chaff he_will_be_burning_up with_ inextinguishable _fire.

Sense 2: fire, bonfire

Semantic entry: 2.5

Semantic domains: Natural Substances

Subdomains: Fire

Definition: a pile or heap of burning material

Notes: The Greek phrase ἅψαντες … πυράν ‘to kindle a fire’ is best rendered in a number of languages by a single verb meaning ‘to make a fire,’ and in some languages it is strange to speak of a ‘fire’ without indicating the type of material which is being burned. Hence, in RV ACT 28:2 · LV ACT 28:2 · Read together ACT 28:2 the appropriate equivalent would be ‘they caused some sticks to burn.’|In some languages a very important distinction is made between two functionally different kinds of fire, one used for getting rid of refuse and the other used for warming oneself. Fire as a destructive agent, mentioned frequently in the book of Revelation (RV REV 8:5 · LV REV 8:5 · Read together REV 8:5 and RV REV 20:10 · LV REV 20:10 · Read together REV 20:10), may require quite a different term from what is used in speaking of a fire for the purpose of warming a person or heating an object.

Sense 3: to cause discord, to cause division

Semantic entry: 39.15

Semantic domains: Hostility, Strife

Subdomains: Division

Definition: (an idiom, literally: to throw fire) to cause discord and contention

Notes: Some translators have preferred to retain the literal rendering of this expression in RV LUK 12:49 · LV LUK 12:49 · Read together LUK 12:49, since this seems to be necessary in view of the larger figurative context, which speaks of ‘how I wish it were already kindled’ (τί θέλω εἰ ἤδη ἀνήφθη). A strictly literal translation may, however, be understood in a completely physical sense, namely, ‘to set the world on fire.’ There are a number of quite diverse interpretations of the significance of this expression in RV LUK 12:49 · LV LUK 12:49 · Read together LUK 12:49. Some have assumed, for example, that it refers to the fire of Pentecost.
