3:1 Yohan-the-immerser’s preaching

(Yhn 1:19-28, Mark 1:1-8, Mat. 3:1-12)

3It was the fifteenth year of the rule of Caesar Tiberius when Pontius Pilate was the governor of Yudea and Herod was the ruler of the Galilean quarter. His brother Philip was the ruler of the Iturean quarter and of the region of Traconitis, and Lysanias was the ruler of the Abilene quarter. 2Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests in Yerushalem, and this was the time when Yohan (son of Zechariah) began preaching God’s message in the wilderness. 3He went around all the areas surrounding the Yordan River, telling the people that they could get immersed in water as a sign they were turning away from disobeying God and requesting forgiveness 4[ref]just like the prophet Isayah had written:

‘The voice shouting in the wilderness

prepare Yahweh’s road,

make his paths straight.

5Every valley will be filled up,

and every mountain and hill will be levelled off.

What’s crooked will be made straight,

and the rough roads will be made smooth.

6and everybody will see God’s salvation.’

7[ref]Because of that, he was telling the crowds that went out there to be immersed by him, “Bunch of snakes! Who warned you all to flee from the severe anger that’s coming? 8[ref]So then start demonstrating the qualities that show you have actually turned from your disobedience. And don’t start by telling me that you’re descendants of Abraham, because I can tell you all that God could make descendants out of these stones here. 9[ref]The axe is already sitting at the base of the trees, so that every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.”

10“What should we do then,” the crowds asked him.

11“If you’ve got two jackets, give one to someone who doesn’t have one,” he replied, “and similarly if you’ve got food.”

12[ref]Even some tax-collectors came to be immersed, and they asked Yohan, “Teacher, what should we do?”

13“Don’t collect any extra on top of what you’ve been told to collect,” he said.

14“And what about us too,” some soldiers inquired.

“Don’t bully people or falsely accuse anyone,” Yohan answered, “and be content with your wages.”

15The people were expecting that the messiah might come to save them and started wondering in their minds if maybe it was Yohan 16but he explained to them all, “I’ve been immersing you all in water, but there’s one coming who’s greater than me, in fact I’m not even worthy to unlace his sandals. He will immerse you all with the holy spirit and with fire. 17He’ll hold the winnowing fork so he can clear out the threshing floor, gathering the wheat into his barn and burning up the chaff with a fire that never goes out.”

18Yohan preached the good message to the people and also encouraged them to change for the better. 19[ref]But Herod who was the ruler of the Galilean quarter had been scolded by Yohan about taking his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, and about many other evil things that he’d done, 20added to his evils when he locked Yohan up in prison.

3And in the_ fifteenth _year of_the government of_Tiberios Kaisar, Pontios Pilatos was governing of_ the _Youdaia, and Haʸrōdaʸs being_quarter_ruler of_ the _Galilaia/(Gālīl), And Filippos the brother of_him being_quarter_ruler of_ the _Itouraios and Traⱪōnitis region, and Lusanios the being_quarter_ruler of_Abilaʸnaʸ, 2during the_chief_priest of_Annas and Kaiafas, the_message of_god became on Yōannaʸs, the of_Zaⱪarias son, in the wilderness.
3And he_came into all the_surrounding_region of_the Yordanaʸs/(Yardēn), proclaiming a_immersion of_repentance for forgiveness of_sins, 4as it_has_been_written in the_scroll of_the_messages of_Aʸsaias/(Yəshaˊyāh) the prophet:
The_voice shouting in the wilderness prepare the way of_the_master, be_making the paths of_him straight.
5Every valley will_be_being_filled, and every mountain and hill will_be_being_brought_low, and the crooked will_be into straight, and the rough ways into smooth, 6and all flesh will_be_seeing the salvation of_ the _god.
7Therefore he_was_saying to_the crowds going_out to_be_immersed by him:
Brood of_vipers, who warned to_you_all to_flee from the coming severe_anger?
8Therefore produce fruits worthy of_ the _repentance, and you_all_may_ not _begin to_be_saying in yourselves, we_are_having the Abraʼam/(ʼAⱱrāhām) As_father, because/for I_am_saying to_you_all that the god is_able to_raise children to_ the _Abraʼam from the these stones.
9And already also the axe is_lying to the root of_the trees, therefore every tree not producing good fruit, is_being_cut_off and is_being_thrown into the_fire.
10And the crowds were_asking him saying:
Therefore what may_we_do?
11And answering he_was_saying to_them:
The one having two tunics, let_share to_the one not having, and the one having foods, likewise let_be_doing.
12And tax_collectors also came to_be_immersed, and they_said to him:
Teacher, what may_we_do?
13And he said to them:
Be_collecting nothing more beside the thing having_been_directed to_you_all.
14And also the_soldiering ones were_asking him saying:
What may_ we _do also?
And he_said to_them:
You_all_may_accost no_one nor you_all_may_falsely_accuse, and be_being_sufficed for_the wages of_you_all.
15And the people expecting and reasoning all in the hearts of_them concerning the Yōannaʸs, whether he might_be the chosen_one/messiah, 16the Yōannaʸs answered saying to_all:
I on_one_hand am_immersing you_all in_water, on_the_other_hand the one mightier than me is_coming, of_whom not I_am worthy to_untie the strap of_the sandals of_him, he will_be_immersing you_all in the_ holy _spirit, and with_fire,
17of_whom the winnowing_fork is in the hand of_him to_clear_out the threshing_floor of_him, and to_gather_together the wheat into the barn of_him, and he_will_be_burning_up the the_chaff with_ inextinguishable _fire.
18Therefore also exhorting many other things indeed, he_was_good_message_preaching to_the people.
19But the Haʸrōdaʸs the quarter_ruler, being_rebuked by him concerning Haʸrōidias, the wife of_the brother of_him, and concerning all evil which the Haʸrōdaʸs did, 20also added this to all things:
he_locked_up the Yōannaʸs in prison.
