3:14 The message to the assembly in Laodicea

14 To the assembly’s messenger in Laodicea write:[ref]

The truth, the faithful and true witness, the originator of God’s creation, says: 15 “I’m aware of what you’ve been doing and that you’re neither hot nor cold. (You’d benefit[fn] if you were hot or cold.) 16 So because you’re lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I’ll spit you out of my mouth. 17 You brag, ‘I’m rich, yes I’ve grown rich and don’t have any needs,’ but you don’t realise that you’re actually miserable and pitiable, and poor and blind and naked. 18 I advise you to buy gold from me that’s been refined by fire so that you might get rich, and buy white clothes so that you can dress yourself so that the shame of your nakedness might not be displayed, and buy ointment to rub on your eyes so that you’ll be able to see. 19 I tell off and discipline those that I love, so be earnest and turn away from your disobedience.[ref] 20 Yes, I stand at the door and knock—if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he’ll eat with me. 21 Anyone who overcomes, I’ll give the right to sit with me on my throne, just like when I conquered and sat with my father on his throne.

22 Everyone who wants to understand needs to listen to what God’s spirit is saying to the assemblies.

3:15 TC: Some manuscripts don’t have this parenthesised sentence at all, and some later manuscripts have ‘I wish’ instead of ‘You’d benefit’.

16 Thus, because lukewarm you _are, and neither hot nor cold, I _am _going you to _spit out _of the mouth of _me.
17 Because you _are _saying, that Rich I _am, and I _have _become _rich, and nothing need I _am _having, and not you _have _known that you are the miserable, and pitiful, and poor, and blind, and naked.
18 I _am _counselling to _you to _buy from me gold having _been _refined by fire, in _order _that you _may _be _rich, and clothes white, in _order _that you _may _clothe yourself, and not may _be _revealed the shame of _the nakedness of _you, and eyesalve to _rub _in the eyes of _you, in _order _that you _may _be _seeing.
19 I as _many _as if may _be _loving, I _am _rebuking and I _am _disciplining, therefore be _being _zealous and repent.
20 Behold, I _have _stood at the door and I _am _knocking, if anyone may _hear of _the voice of _me and may _open _up the door, I _will _be _coming _in to him, and I _will _be _dining with him, and he with me.
21 The one overcoming, I _will _be _giving to _him to _sit _down with me on the throne of _me, as also _I overcame, and sat _down with the father of _me on the throne of _him.
22 The one having an_ear, him _let _hear what the spirit is _saying to _the assemblies.
