Therefore, no longer able to bear it, we decided to be left behind in Athens alone, 2 and we sent Timothy, our brother and {co-worker}[fn] of God [[and our fellow worker]][fn] in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen you and encourage you concerning your faith, 3 so that no one would be shaken by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. 4 Indeed, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we were going to be afflicted, just as it happened, and you know.
For this reason, I could no longer bear it and sent to know your faith, lest somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain.
But now, having come to us from you, Timothy has brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good memories of us, longing to see us just as we also long to see you. 7 For this reason, we were comforted, brothers, in you in all our distress and affliction through your faith. 8 For now we live, if you stand firm in the Lord. 9 For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God, 10 night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face and complete what is lacking in your faith?
Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus [[Christ]],[fn] direct our way to you;
And may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we also do for you, 13 to strengthen your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus [[Christ]][fn] with all his holy ones [amen].[fn]
