ἀδύνατος

Strong’s: G102

Associated OET lemmas: ἀδύνατος

Notes: This statement in RV HEB 6:18 · LV HEB 6:18 · Read together HEB 6:18 may provide certain philosophical problems in view of the doctrine of the absoluteness of God, but no doubt the writer of Hebrews makes this statement in view of the presumed nature of God himself.

Form 1

Part of speech: adjc.

Inflections: ἀδύνατος; -ον

Constructions: ἀδύνατος; ἀ-; δύναμαι

Sense 1: incapable, not being able

Semantic entry: 74.22

Semantic domains: Able, Capable

Definition: pertaining to not being able to do or experience something

Notes: In RV ROM 15:1 · LV ROM 15:1 · Read together ROM 15:1 οἱ δυνατοί refers to capability with respect to faith and τῶν ἀδυνάτων refers, conversely, to those who are incapable with respect to faith. In some languages, therefore, it may be possible to use a similar biblical phrase, weak in the faith.|In many languages the appropriate equivalent of RV ACT 14:8 · LV ACT 14:8 · Read together ACT 14:8 would be but in Lystra there was a man who was crippled.

OET-RV ROM 15:1

15 We who are powerful should be carrying the weaknesses of the powerless, rather than just trying to please ourselves.

OET-LV ROM 15:1

15 And ought we, the powerful, the weaknesses of_the powerless to_be_bearing, and not to_ourselves to_be_bringing_pleasure.

Sense 2: impossible

Semantic entry: 71.3

Semantic domains: Mode

Subdomains: Possible, Impossible

Definition: pertaining to being impossible, presumably because of a lack of power to alter or control circumstances

Notes: In RV HEB 6:4 · LV HEB 6:4 · Read together HEB 6:4 the use of ἀδύνατον seems to be an instance of hyperbole in view of the warnings against apostasy (see RV HEB 5:11 · LV HEB 5:11 · Read together HEB 5:11). Therefore, one may translate ἀδύνατον in RV HEB 6:4 · LV HEB 6:4 · Read together HEB 6:4 as ‘it is extremely difficult to.’ TEV introduces a rhetorical question to express strong doubt, “for how can those who abandon their faith be brought back to repent again?”
