2:19 Yosef’s family return to Nazaret
19 After King Herod died, one of Yahweh’s messengers appeared to Yosef in Egypt in a dream 20 and said, “Get ready and take the child and his mother back to Yisrael, because the ones wanting to kill him have died.” 21 So Yosef packed up and took the child and his mother and went back to Yisrael.
22 However, when he heard that Arkelaos was now reigning over Yudea (instead of his father Herod), and also having been warned in a dream, he left Yudea and went north to the Galilee area. 23 Once he got there, he settled into a town called Nazaret, and so what had been spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: “He’ll be called a Nazarene.”[fn][ref]
2:23 This is not a specific quote from the Hebrew Scriptures, but note that Matthew does say ‘the prophets’ (not ‘the prophet’). This could be: ¹A play on Hebrew ‘נצר’ from Yeshayah/Isaiah 11:1 where ‘branch/shoot’ (netser) is similar to ‘Natsaret’ (Nazaret/natsrat), ²a play on Shimshon (Samson) the ‘Nazirite’ (נְזִיר) from Heroes (Judges) 13:5,7, or ³just a slur on Yeshua being from insignificant Nazaret (Nazareth) as per Yohan (John) 1:46.
