18:1 Who is the greatest?
(Mark 9:33-37; Luke 9:46-48; 17:1-2)
18 Around that time, Yeshua’s apprentices approached him and asked him, “So who’ll be the greatest in the heavenly kingdom?”[ref]
2 Yeshua called in a small child, stood the child in the middle of the room,3 and said, “I can assure you all that if you don’t change to become like a small child, you certainly won’t enter the heavenly kingdom,[ref]4 so anyone who makes themself humble like this small child is greater in the heavenly kingdom.5 Anyone who accepts a small child like this in my name is accepting me.
6 “But anyone who causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would have been better for that person if a heavy stone had been hung around their neck and they’d been sunk in the deep lake.7 The world suffers due to temptations, because it’s necessary for temptations to come, but it won’t be good for the person who brings the temptation.
8 “If your hand or foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away, because it’s better for you to enter eternal life maimed or lame than to be thrown into the eternal fire with two hands and two feet.[ref]9 And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away, because it’s better for you to enter eternal life with only one eye than to be thrown into the pit of fire with two eyes.[ref]
