Psalm 121

A psalm written for people going up to the temple to worship

121 I cried out to Yahweh when I was distressed

and he responded to me.

2 I prayed,

“Yahweh, save me from those who lie to me and try to deceive me!”

3 You who deceive other people,

Yahweh will certainly punish you!

4 When Yahweh punishes you, it will be as if soldiers were shooting sharp arrows at you

as well as throwing hot coals from the wood of a broom tree.

5 It is terrible for me because it has been like I have lived far from Israel.

For it was as though I was sojourning in the region of Meshech or living among those who live in the tents of the region of Kedar.

6 I lived for a long time among people who hate to live with others peacefully.

7 I want to live with others peacefully. But every time I talk about living together peacefully,

they talk about wanting to start a war.

I look up toward the tops of the hills and I think, “Who will help me?”

2 Then I remember, “Yahweh is the one who will help me.

He is the one who made the whole world.”

3 Then someone said to me, “God will keep your from being harmed,

he will always be ready to protect you.

4 Surely Yahweh, who protects the Israelites, is always ready to protect you.

5 Yahweh guards you.

He is like the shade of a tree that protects you,

6 so that the sun will not harm you during the day,

and the moon will not harm you during the night.

7 Yahweh will guard you from all kinds of harm.

He will keep you safe.

8 Yahweh will protect you from the time that you leave your house in the morning until you return to your house in the evening.

He will protect you now and he will protect you forever.”
