PISGAH, Mount

Mountain located at the northeast end of the Dead Sea near the ancient city of Jericho. Balak took Balaam to the top of Pisgah (Nm 23:14), and Moses was told to go to its summit to view the Promised Land (Dt 3:27). Later, Moses returned to the top of Pisgah to die (34:1). Pisgah’s slopes border the Dead Sea, or Sea of the Arabah (Dt 3:17; 4:49; Jos 12:3; 13:20). The KJB sometimes refers to these slopes as “Ashdoth-pisgah.” Many scholars identify Mt Pisgah with modern Ras es-Siyaghah, just north of Mt Nebo.
