85 For the musical director: a song by Korah’s descendants.
85 Yahweh, you’ve shown favour to your country.
≈You have restored Yakov’s well-being.
2 You have forgiven your people’s disobedience.
≈You’ve covered over all their sin. (Instrumental break.)
3 You have withdrawn all your rage.
≈You’ve turned back from your hot anger.
4 Restore us, God who saves us,
and don’t stay upset with us.
5 Will you be angry with us forever?
≈Will you remain angry throughout future generations?
Then your people could be happy about you.
7 Show us your loyal commitment, Yahweh.
≈Grant us your salvation.
8 I will listen to what Yahweh God says,
because he will make peace with his people—his faithful ones,
yet they mustn’t turn back again to doing foolish things.
9 Certainly he must be close to rescuing those who strive to obey him,
then glory[fn] will remain in our land.
10 Loyal commitment and trustworthiness have met together.
≈Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 Trustworthiness springs up from the ground,
≈and righteousness looks down from the sky.
12 Yes, Yahweh will give his good blessings,
→and then our land will yield its crops.
13 Righteousness will go before Yahweh,
→and make a way for his footsteps.
85:9 Many translations add ‘his’ to explain that it’s God’s glory, but we’ve left it ambiguous because it could also refer to the people’s glory/honour.
