TSNTyndale Study Notes:

Ps 85 The psalmist leads the postexilic community in lament and prayer for full redemption. He ponders God’s past rescue of Israel from exile (85:1-3), longs for greater evidence of God’s goodness, and leads the community in prayer for full restoration (85:4-7). God responds with a message of peace (85:8-9), and the psalm concludes with a lyrical outburst at the grandeur of God’s salvation (85:10-13).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

Covenant faithfulness and trustworthiness have met together

(Some words not found in UHB: surely near to,fear, him salvation, his that, dwell glory in/on/at/with,land,our )

The abstract nouns “faithfulness” and “trustworthiness” are spoken of as if they were persons who meet together. This could mean: (1) God has been faithful because of his covenant and has done what he promised to do. Alternate translation: “God has been faithful to his covenant and has proven that he is worthy of people trusting him” or (2) God has been faithful because of his covenant and the people have responded by being faithful to him. Alternate translation: “God has been faithful to his covenant and people have responded by trusting him” (See also: figs-personification)

have met together & have kissed each other

(Some words not found in UHB: surely near to,fear, him salvation, his that, dwell glory in/on/at/with,land,our )

Most likely the speaker is describing a time in the future when God causes the people to prosper again. Alternate translation: “will meet together … will kiss each other”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

righteousness and peace have kissed each other

(Some words not found in UHB: surely near to,fear, him salvation, his that, dwell glory in/on/at/with,land,our )

This could mean: (1) the people will do what is right and God will cause the people to live in peace or (2) God will do what is right and will cause the people to live in peace. Either way righteousness and peace are abstract nouns and are spoken of as if they were persons who kiss each other. (See also: figs-personification)

kissed each other

(Some words not found in UHB: surely near to,fear, him salvation, his that, dwell glory in/on/at/with,land,our )

This was a common way for friends to greet each other.
