AICNT MARK Chapter 9

MARK 9 ©

9And he said to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God having come with power.”

2And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and leads them up a high mountain alone by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3and his clothes became dazzling white [[as snow]],[fn] as no launderer on earth can whiten them.

4And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5And Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6For he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid.

7And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with themselves.

9And as they were coming down from the mountain, he instructed them not to tell anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10And they kept the matter to themselves, discussing what it meant to rise from the dead.

11And they asked him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 12And he said to them, “Elijah does come first and restores all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13But I say to you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him.”

14And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them and scribes arguing with them. 15And immediately all the crowd, when the whole crowd saw him, they were amazed and ran up to greet him. 16And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”

17And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a mute spirit. 18And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. And I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” 19And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.”

20And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth.

21And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

23And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can [[believe]]’![fn] All things are possible for one who believes.” 24Immediately the father of the child cried out [[with tears]][fn] and said, “I believe [[Lord]];[fn] help my unbelief!”

25And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that {most}[fn] of them said, “He is dead.” 27But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.

28And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer [[and fasting]].”[fn]

30And from there they went out and {passed}[fn] through Galilee, and he did not want anyone to know; 31for he was teaching his disciples and saying to them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to the hands of men, and they will kill him, and after being killed, he will rise {after three days}.”[fn] 32But they did not understand the statement, and they were afraid to ask him.

33And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you discussing [[among yourselves]][fn] on the way?” 34But they were silent; for on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest.

35And sitting down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he will be last of all and servant of all.”

36And taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and embracing it, he said to them, 37“Whoever receives one of such children in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, does not receive me but the one who sent me.”

38John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone [[who does not follow us]][fn] casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not following us.”

39But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him; for no one who performs a miracle in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me; 40{for whoever is not against us is for us}.[fn]

41“For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in {the name that you are of Christ},[fn] truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.

42“And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe [in me] to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

43“And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled than having two hands to go into Gehenna,[fn] into the unquenchable fire 44[[where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.]][fn]

45“And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life lame than having two feet to be thrown into Gehenna [[to the fire that shall never be quenched.]][fn] 46Their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.

47“And if your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna,[fn] 48[[where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched]].[fn]

49“{For everyone will be salted with fire.}[fn]

50“Salt is good; but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
