AICNT MARK Chapter 15

MARK 15 ©

15And immediately in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders and scribes and the whole council, having made a plan, bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

2And Pilate questioned him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” He answered him, “You say so.” 3And the chief priests accused him of many things. [[But he answered nothing.]][fn]

4But Pilate again questioned him, saying, “Do you not answer anything? See how many things they accuse you of.”

5But Jesus no longer answered anything, so that Pilate was amazed.

6Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. 7And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. 8So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom.

9Then he answered them, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10For he knew that it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed him over. 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.

12Pilate spoke to them again, “What then {do you want me to do}[fn] [to the one you call][fn] the King of the Jews?” 13They shouted back, “Crucify him!”

14Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him!”

15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.

16And the soldiers led him away inside the courtyard, which is the Praetorium, and they called together the whole cohort. 17They dressed him in purple and, having woven a crown of thorns, they put it on him; 18and they began to greet him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19And they struck his head with a reed and spat on him and, kneeling down, they paid homage to him. 20And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple and dressed him in his own clothes. And they led him out to crucify him.

21And they compel a certain passerby, Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22And they bring him to the place called Golgotha, which is translated Place of the Skull. 23And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it [[to drink]].[fn]

24And they crucify him and divide his garments, casting lots for them to determine who should take what. 25Now it was the third hour, and they crucified him. 26And the inscription of the charge against him was written, “The King of the Jews.”

27And with him they crucify two robbers, one on the right and one on his left. 28[[And the scripture was fulfilled, which says, And he was numbered with the transgressors.]][fn]

29And those passing by were blaspheming[fn] him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30save yourself by coming down from the cross.”

31Similarly, the chief priests, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.”

And those who were crucified with him also reproached him.

33And when the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

35And some of those standing nearby, hearing this, said, “Look, he is calling for Elijah.” 36And someone ran [and] filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave him a drink, saying, “Let us see if Elijah comes to take him down.” 37But Jesus, having let out a loud voice, breathed his last.

38And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39And when the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw that he [[cried out and]][fn] breathed his last in this way, he said, “Truly, this man was a son of God.”

40There were also women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, 41who, when he was in Galilee, followed him and served him, and many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.

42And when it was already evening, since it was the day of preparation, which is the day before the Sabbath, 43Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting for the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

44Pilate was surprised that he was already dead, and summoning the centurion, he asked him if he had been dead for some time. 45And when he learned from the centurion, he granted the {corpse}[fn] to Joseph.

46And having bought a linen cloth, he took him down, wrapped him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock, and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.
