Love not hate to be in the light

This is still a very early look into the unfinished text of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check the text in advance before using in public.

Readers’ Version

Literal Version

2:7 Love not hate to be in the light

7[ref]Dear friends, I’m not writing a new rule for you all, but reminding you of an old rule that you had from the beginning. This old rule is the message that you all heard. 8Then again I am writing a new rule to you—a rule which is true in Yeshua and in you all, because the darkness is already disappearing and the true light is already shining.

9Anyone who says they’re in the light but hates a fellow believer,[fn] is still in the darkness. 10It’s the person that loves their fellow believers who is living in the light and doesn’t offend anyone. 11But the person who hates a fellow believer is living and walking in the darkness and doesn’t know where they’re going because they’re blinded.

2:9 Literally ‘our brothers’. In this letter that term could refer to ‘siblings’, ‘fellow believers’, or ‘fellow citizens’ (or Yohan could be alternating between two or three of them in his mind as he wrote). After considering all the uses of the term in chapters 2–5, we have taken ‘fellow believers’ as being more likely, i.e., the context would often seem to be focussing on believers (even though most of us would want to apply 3:16–17 to also include ‘fellow citizens’).

7Beloved, I_am_ not _writing a_ new _command to_you_all, but a_ old _command, which you_all_were_having from the_beginning.
The the old command is the message that you_all_heard.
8Again I_am_writing a_ new _command to_you_all, which is true in him and in you_all, because the darkness is_being_passed_away, and the the true light is_ already _shining.
9The one saying to_be in the light, and hating the brother of_him, is in the darkness until now.
10The one loving the brother of_him, is_remaining in the light, and offense is not in him 11But the one hating the brother of_him, is in the darkness, and is_walking in the darkness, and has_ not _known where he_is_going, because the darkness blinded the eyes of_him.
