Literal Version

2:1 The messiah is our advocate

2I am writing to you all, my treasured new believers, so that you might avoid sinning. If anyone should sin, we have an advocate to help us relate to the father: Yeshua the sinless messiah, 2and it’s him who is the atonement for our sins—not just our sins, but also the sins of the entire world.

3We will know if we really know Yeshua if we obey his teachings. 4If someone says that they know Yeshua but don’t do what he taught, that person is a liar and hasn’t internalised the truth. 5However the person who obeys Yeshua’s teaching demonstrates that God’s love has truly been planted in them. We know that we are alive in Yeshua if 6we claim to live in him and then live our lives like he lived.

2Little_children of_me, I_am_writing these things to_you_all, in_order_that you_may_ not _sin.
And if anyone may_sin, we_are_having an_advocate with the father, Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah the_righteous,
2and he is the_atonement for the sins of_us, and not for the our sins only, but also for all the world.
3And by this we_are_knowing that we_have_known him, if we_may_be_keeping the commands of_him.
4The one saying, that I_have_known him, and not keeping the commands of_him, is a_liar, and the truth is not in this one, 5but whoever wishfully may_be_keeping the message of_him, truly the love of_ the _god has_been_perfected in this one.
By this we_are_knowing that we_are in him:
6the one saying to_be_remaining in him, ought also himself to_be_walking as that one walked.

2:7 Love not hate to be in the light

7[ref]Dear friends, I’m not writing a new rule for you all, but reminding you of an old rule that you had from the beginning. This old rule is the message that you all heard. 8Then again I am writing a new rule to you—a rule which is true in Yeshua and in you all, because the darkness is already disappearing and the true light is already shining.

9Anyone who says they’re in the light but hates a fellow believer,[fn] is still in the darkness. 10It’s the person that loves their fellow believers who is living in the light and doesn’t offend anyone. 11But the person who hates a fellow believer is living and walking in the darkness and doesn’t know where they’re going because they’re blinded.

7Beloved, I_am_ not _writing a_ new _command to_you_all, but a_ old _command, which you_all_were_having from the_beginning.
The the old command is the message that you_all_heard.
8Again I_am_writing a_ new _command to_you_all, which is true in him and in you_all, because the darkness is_being_passed_away, and the the true light is_ already _shining.
9The one saying to_be in the light, and hating the brother of_him, is in the darkness until now.
10The one loving the brother of_him, is_remaining in the light, and offense is not in him 11But the one hating the brother of_him, is in the darkness, and is_walking in the darkness, and has_ not _known where he_is_going, because the darkness blinded the eyes of_him.

2:12 Don’t love the things of this world

12I’m writing to you new believers because your sins have been forgiven because of Yeshua authority. 13I’m writing to you fathers because you have known the messiah from the beginning.[ref] 14I wrote to you new believers because you have know the father. I wrote to you fathers because you have known the messiah from the beginning.[ref] I wrote to you young men because you are strong and God’s message lives in you and you have overcome the evil one.

15Don’t be loving the world nor the things in the world. The father’s love does not live in anyone who loves the world 16because everything that’s in the world, bodily desires and lusts and arrogant living, is not from the father but from the world. 17And the world will come to an end along with the desire for it, but the person obeying God’s desires will continue to live.

12I_am_writing to_you_all, little_children, because your sins have_been_forgiven to_you_all, because_of the name of_him.
13I_am_writing to_you_all, fathers, because you_all_have_known the one from the_beginning.
I_am_writing to_you_all, young_men, because you_all_have_overcome the evil one.
14I_wrote to_you_all, little_children, because you_all_have_known the father.
I_wrote to_you_all, fathers, because you_all_have_known the one from the_beginning.
I_wrote to_you_all, young_men, because you_all_are strong ones, and the message of_ the _god is_remaining in you_all, and you_all_have_overcome the evil one.
15Neither be_loving the world, nor the things in the world.
If anyone may_be_loving the world, the love of_the father is not in him.
16Because all which is in the world, the desire of_the flesh, and the desire of_the eyes, and the arrogance of_the living, is not from the father, but is from the world.
17And the world and the desire of_it is_being_passed_away, but the one doing the will of_ the _god is_remaining for the age.

2:18 Beware of ‘new’ teaching

18New believers, it’s now the last times and what you heard about the false messiah coming is now happening. Many false messiahs have already been around and that confirms that it’s now the last times. 19They came from our group, but they were never truly part of us because if they were, they would have stayed with us. But they left us so it would be revealed that they’re not part of us.

20But you all have received the spirit[fn] from the chosen messiah[fn] and you all know all about it.[fn] 21I didn’t write to you all because you don’t know the truth, but because you have known the truth and any falsehood is not part of it.

22Anyone who teaches that Yeshua is not the messiah is a liar. And anyone who disowns the father and the son is a false messiah. 23Anyone who disowns the son, doesn’t know the father either—only those who confess the son know the father

24What you all heard from the beginning, that’s what you should hold to. If the message that you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you also will remain in the son and in the father, 25and in that case, what he promised us is to live forever.

26I wrote these things to you all concerning those who would mislead you. 27But for you, the spirit that you received from Yeshua remains in you all and so you don’t need anyone else to teach you because his spirit teaches you about everything. The spirit teaches truth and not lies, and since you were taught by the spirit then you are remaining in Yeshua.

28So now you new believers, remain in him so that when he is revealed, we can have boldness and not be ashamed of him when he comes back. 29Because you know that he is sinless, you also know that anyone faithfully obeying his teaching has been reborn in him.

2:9 Literally ‘our brothers’. In this letter that term could refer to ‘siblings’, ‘fellow believers’, or ‘fellow citizens’ (or Yohan could be alternating between two or three of them in his mind as he wrote). After considering all the uses of the term in chapters 2–5, we have taken ‘fellow believers’ as being more likely, i.e., the context would often seem to be focussing on believers (even though most of us would want to apply 3:16–17 to also include ‘fellow citizens’).

2:20 anointing: It’s not really clear here what Yohan is referring to that they have received: God’s favour? a skill or ability? a blessing? the Holy Spirit? But v27 below seems to be talking about God’s holy spirit.

2:20 holy (one): Yohan seems to be referring to Yeshua here.

2:20 You all know all: also unclear what Yohan means.

18Little_children, it_is the_last hour, and as you_all_heard that the_anti-messiah is_coming, even now many false_messiahs have_become, whence we_are_knowing that it_is the_last hour.
19They_came_out from us, but they_were not of us, because/for if they_were of us, they_ would _had_remained with us, but in_order_that they_may_be_revealed that they_are all not of us.
20And you_all are_having the_anointing from the holy one, and you_all_have_known all.
21I_ not _wrote to_you_all because you_all_have_ not _known the truth, but because you_all_have_known it, and because any falsehood is not of the truth.
22Who is the liar, except not/lest the one disowning that Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) is not the chosen_one/messiah?
This one is the anti-messiah, the one disowning the father and the son.
23Everyone which disowning the son, neither is_having the father.
The one confessing the son, also is_having the father.
24You_all, what you_all_heard from the_beginning, let_it_be_remaining in you_all.
If it_may_remain in you_all what you_all_heard from the_beginning, you_all also will_be_remaining in the son and in the father.
25And this is the promise which he promised to_us, the eternal the life.
26I_wrote these things to_you_all concerning the ones misleading you_all.
27And you_all, the anointing that you_all_received from him, is_remaining in you_all, and you_all_are_ not _having need that anyone may_be_teaching you_all, but as the anointing of_him is_teaching you_all concerning all things, and is true and is not a_falsehood, and as it_taught you_all, you_all_are_remaining in him.
28And now, little_children, be_remaining in him, in_order_that if he_may_be_revealed, we_may_have boldness, and we _may_ not _be_ashamed because_of him at the coming of_him.
29If you_all_may_have_known that he_is righteous, you_all_are_knowing that also everyone which practicing the righteousness has_been_born of him.
