ἀσθένεια

Strong’s: G769

Associated OET lemmas: ἀσθένεια · ἀσθενέστερος

Form 1

Part of speech: noun, f.

Inflections: ἀσθένεια; -ας

Constructions: ἀσθένεια; ἀ-; σθενόω

Sense 1: incapacity, weakness, limitation

Semantic entry: 74.23

Semantic domains: Able, Capable

Definition: a state of incapacity to do or experience something

Notes: A literal rendering of this expression in RV CO2 12:9 · LV CO2 12:9 · Read together CO2 12:9 may not be meaningful, and in fact can be quite misleading. δύναμις is best interpreted as ‘God’s power’ and ἀσθένεια as the weakness which Paul experienced. Therefore, one may be able to translate as ‘my power is greatest when you are weak’ (see Today’s English Version).

OET-RV ROM 6:19

19 I’m speaking from a human perspective because of your human weakness. Just as you previously used parts of your bodies as slaves to impurity and lawlessness, leading down to further lawlessness, so now present your body parts as slaves to righteousness, leading up to holiness.

OET-LV ROM 6:19

19 In_human terms I_am_speaking, because_of the weakness of_the flesh of_you_all.
For/Because as you_all_presented the members of_you_all as_slaves to_ the _impurity, and to_ the _lawlessness further to the lawlessness, thus now present the members of_you_all, as_slaves to_ the _righteousness to holiness.

OET-RV ROM 8:26

26 Similarly, the spirit also helps us with our weaknesses, because we don’t even know what to pray for, but the spirit intercedes with groanings that we can’t put into words.

OET-LV ROM 8:26

26 And likewise also the spirit is_helping with_the weakness of_us, because/for the who we_may_pray as it_is_fitting, not we_have_known, but itself the spirit is_interceding with_groanings inexpressible.

Sense 2: illness, disability, weakness

Semantic entry: 23.143

Semantic domains: Physiological Processes and States

Subdomains: Sickness, Disease, Weakness

Definition: the state of being ill and thus incapacitated in some manner

Notes: It may be extremely difficult in some languages to speak of ‘taking illness’ or ‘carrying away diseases.’ A strictly literal rendering of such an expression might suggest immediately that Jesus was a type of medicine man who healed others by taking upon himself precisely the same kinds of diseases (a widespread shamanistic practice). It may therefore be necessary in some languages to translate RV MAT 8:17 · LV MAT 8:17 · Read together MAT 8:17 as ‘he caused us to no longer have illness and disease.’ In this way, one may avoid a specific type of shamanistic practice which would be inappropriate in this context.
