Section 5:12–16: Jesus healed a man with a dreaded skin disease

In this section, Jesus healed a man with a skin disease, and so Jesus’ fame spread in that region. As a result, crowds of people came to hear him teach and to be healed of diseases.

In Jesus’ time, having a skin disease made a person ceremonially or ritually “unclean.” This meant that a person with such a disease was not allowed to worship God with other people. This person had to live apart from healthy people, including his family.

But: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as But here means “in spite of this.” Even though Jesus had told the man not to tell other people (5:14a), the news about Jesus still spread.

It is implicit here that the man did not obey Jesus’ command to tell no one what had happened. (This is explicit in Mark 1:45.) The man told other people and the news about Jesus spread even further than before. If you think that people will not understand this, you might consider making this explicit. For example:

the news about Jesus: The Greek word that the BSB translates as news literally means “word” or “message.” Here it refers to the report about Jesus’ power to heal leprosy. Some ways to translate this are:

the news/report about what Jesus had done

the news/report that Jesus could heal sick people

spread all the more: The tense of the Greek verb for spread indicates that the report about Jesus was continuing to spread. The phrase all the more here means “to a greater degree.” People kept telling other people about Jesus so that more and more people heard about him.

Some other ways to translate this are:

spread even further than before

went to even more people than before

As a result, great/large crowds were gathering to listen to him teach and to be healed from their diseases.
The result was that very many people kept coming together to hear his message, and those who were sick among them came for him to heal them.

and: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as and introduces a result. The news of Jesus’ power was spreading, so people wanted to see him. They wanted to hear him teach. People who were sick wanted him to heal them.

Use a natural way in your language to connect the fact that Jesus was becoming well-known with the result of people coming to hear him. Some other ways to express this connection are:

great crowds came to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses: This part of the verse has two verbs: hear and be healed. The subject of both verbs is great crowds. Everyone came to listen to Jesus. Some of those who came to listen were also sick and wanted to be healed.

Some other ways to translate this are:

crowds of people came to Jesus. Many/some came to listen to him teach, and many/some came to be healed from their sicknesses

crowds of people came to hear Jesus, and those who were sick among them came to be healed of their sicknesses

great crowds: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as great crowds is literally “many crowds.” This phrase emphasizes the great size of the crowd. It does not mean that there were separate groups of people. Use a natural way in your language to refer to a very large crowd. For example:

came: The Greek word that the BSB translates as came means to “come together,” “gather,” or “assemble.” Luke used a Greek verb form that suggests a repeated event. It did not happen just once. Some ways to translate this are:

healed of their sicknesses: In some languages the verb healed implies sickness. For such languages, including the phrase of their sicknesses is not necessary. If that is true in your language, you could simply say:
