The Book of Numbers 13

13And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Send for you men, and they shall explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel. One man, one man to the tribe of his fathers you shall send, every one a leader among them.” 3And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran upon the mouth of Yahweh. All of them were men; they were heads of the sons of Israel. 4And these were their names: for the tribe of Reuben, Shammua, the son of Zaccur; 5for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat, the son of Hori; 6for the tribe of Judah, Caleb, the son of Jephunneh; 7for the tribe of Issachar, Igal, the son of Joseph; 8for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea, the son of Nun; 9for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti, the son of Raphu; 10for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel, the son of Sodi; 11for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi, the son of Susi; 12for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel, the son of Gemalli; 13for the tribe of Asher, Sethur, the son of Michael; 14for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi, the son of Vophsi; 15for the tribe of Gad, Geuel, the son of Maki. 16These were the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land; and Moses called Hoshea, the son of Nun, Joshua. 17And Moses sent them to explore the land of Canaan, and he said to them, “Go up this in the Negev, and you shall go up the hill country. 18And you shall see the land, what it is; and the people dwelling upon it, whether it is strong or weak, whether it is few or many; 19and what is the land in which it is dwelling, whether it is good or evil; and what are the cities in which it is dwelling, whether in camps or in fortresses; 20and what is the land, whether it is fat or lean, whether there are trees in it or not, and you shall strengthen yourselves, and you shall take from the fruit of the land.” (And the days were the days of the firstfruits of the grapes.) 21And they went up, and they explored the land from the wilderness of Zin up to Rehob, Lebo Hamath. 22And they went up in the Negev, and they came as far as Hebron. And there were Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, those born of the Anak. (And Hebron was built seven years to the face of Zoan, Egypt.) 23And they came as far as Wadi Eshkol, and they cut from there a branch and one cluster of grapes, and they carried it on the carrying pole with two, and from the pomegranates and from the figs. 24He called that place Wadi Eshkol on account of the cluster that the sons of Israel cut from there. 25And they returned from exploring the land at the end of 40 days, 26and they went and they came to Moses and to Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. And they returned them and all the congregation a word, and they showed them the fruit of the land, 27and they recounted to him, and they said, “We went to the land where you sent us, and indeed it is flowing with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28However, the people dwelling in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified very great, and also we saw those born of the Anak there. 29Amalek is dwelling in the land of the Negev, and the Hittite and the Jebusite and the Amorite is dwelling in the hill country, and the Canaanite is dwelling upon the sea and upon the hand of the Jordan.” 30And Caleb hushed the people to Moses, and he said, “Going up, we will go up, and we will possess it, for being able, we are able against it.” 31But the men who went up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for it is stronger than us.” 32And they brought out a bad report of the land that they explored to the sons of Israel, saying, “The land through which we passed to explore it, it is a land eating the ones dwelling in it. And all the people whom we saw in the midst of it were men of size, 33and there we saw the Nephils (the sons of Anak are from the Nephils), and we were in our eyes like the grasshoppers, and thus we were in their eyes.”
