Numbers 32

32And the livestock for the sons of Reuben and for the sons of Gad was many, very mighty. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place, was a place of livestock. 2And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the congregation, saying, 3“Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon, 4the land that Yahweh struck to the face of the congregation of Israel, it, is a land of livestock, and to your servants, is livestock.” 5And they said, “If we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. May you not pass us over the Jordan.”

6And Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben, “Will your brothers go to the battle, and you, you will dwell here? 7And why do you forbid the heart of the sons of Israel from passing over to the land that Yahweh has given to them? 8Thus your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. 9And they went up as far as Wadi Eshkol, and they saw the land, and they forbade the heart of the sons of Israel not to go to the land that Yahweh had given to them. 10And the nose of Yahweh burned on that day, and he swore, saying, 11‘If the men, the ones going up from Egypt, from a son of 20 years and upward, see the ground that I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob! For they did not fill after me, 12except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, because they filled after Yahweh.’ 13And the nose of Yahweh burned against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness 40 years, until the finishing of all the generation, the ones doing the evil in the eyes of Yahweh. 14And behold, you have risen instead of your fathers, a brood of sinful men, to sweep away more upon the burning of the nose of Yahweh to Israel. 15For you will return from after him, and he will add still to make him rest in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.”

16And they came near to him and said, “We will build pens of a flock for our livestock here, and cities for our children. 17And we, we will be equipped, being hurried, to the face of the sons of Israel, until whenever we have brought them to their place. And our children will dwell in the cities of the fortification from the face of the dwellers of the land. 18We will not return to our houses until the sons of Israel have inherited, a man his inheritance. 19For we will not inherit with them from across to the Jordan and beyond, for our inheritance has come to us from across the Jordan toward the sunrise.”

20And Moses said to them, “If you do this word, if you are equipped to the face of Yahweh for the battle, 21and every equipped one passes over the Jordan for you to the face of Yahweh until he has dispossessed his enemies from his face, 22and the land is subdued to the face of Yahweh, then after you shall return, and you will be innocent from Yahweh and from Israel, and this land will be for you for a possession to the face of Yahweh. 23But if you do not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh, and know your sin, that it will find you. 24Build for you cities for your children and pens for your flock, and the thing going out from your mouth you shall do.” 25And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben said to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do just as my master is commanding. 26Our children, our wives, our livestock, and all our animals will be there in the cities of the Gilead. 27And your servants will pass over, every equipped one of an army, to the face of Yahweh for the battle, just as my lord is speaking.”

28And Moses commanded for them Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers of the tribes for the sons of Israel. 29And Moses said to them, “If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben pass over the Jordan with you, every equipped one for the war to the face of Yahweh, and the land is subdued to your faces, then you shall give to them the land of the Gilead for a possession. 30But if they do not pass over, being equipped, with you, then they shall possess in your midst in the land of Canaan.” 31And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, “What Yahweh has spoken to your servants, thus we will do. 32We, we will pass over, being equipped, to the face of Yahweh, to the land of Canaan, and with us, will be the possession of our inheritance from across to the Jordan.”

33And Moses gave to them, to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben and to the half of the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon the king of the Amorite and the kingdom of Og the king of the Bashan, the land to its cities in the borders, the cities of the land all around. 34And the sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer, 35and Atroth Shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah, 36and Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, cities of fortification and pens of a flock. 37And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim 38and Nebo and Baal Meon (being changed of name) and Sibmah. And they called by names the names of the cities that they built.

39And the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and he dispossessed the Amorite that, was in it. 40And Moses gave the Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he dwelled in it.

41And Jair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and he called them Havvoth Jair.

42And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its daughters, and he called it Nobah, by his name.
