35 And Yahweh spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab beside the Jordan, at Jericho, saying, 2 “Command the sons of Israel, and they shall give to the Levites from the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell. And pastureland for the cities around them you shall give to the Levites. 3 And the cities shall be for them to dwell, and their pasturelands shall be for their animal and for their property and for all their living thing. 4 And the pasturelands of the cities that you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outside 1,000 cubits all around. 5 And you shall measure from outside to the city the edge to the east 2,000 by the cubit, and the edge of the south 2,000 by the cubit, and the edge of the west 2,000 by the cubit, and the edge of the north 2,000 by the cubit, and the city in the midst. This shall be for them the pasturelands of the cities. 6 And the cities that you shall give to the Levites, shall be the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the fleeing there of the one having killed; and besides them you shall give 42 cities. 7 All of the cities that you shall give to the Levites, shall be 48 cities, them and their pasturelands. 8 And the cities that you shall give from the possession of the sons of Israel: from with the many you shall increase, and from with the few you shall decrease. A man according to the mouth of his inheritance that they inherit shall give from his cities to the Levites.”
9 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you are passing over the Jordan to the land of Canaan, 11 then you shall make happen for you cities; cities of refuge they shall be for you. And shall flee there one having killed, one having struck a person by mistake. 12 And they will be for you the cities for refuge from one redeeming, and the one having killed will not die until his standing to the face of the congregation for the judgment. 13 And the cities that you shall give, six cities of refuge shall be for you. 14 The three cities you shall give from across to the Jordan, and the three cities you shall give in the land of Canaan; cities of refuge they shall be. 15 For the sons of Israel and for the sojourner and for the temporary resident in their midst these six cities shall be for refuge, for the fleeing there of everyone having struck a person by mistake. 16 But if he struck him with a vessel of iron and he died, he, is one having killed. Dying, the one having killed shall be put to death. 17 And if with a stone of a hand, by which he dies, he struck him and he died, he, is one having killed. Dying, the one having killed shall be put to death. 18 Or with a vessel of wood of a hand, by which he dies, he struck him and he died, he, is one having killed. Dying, the one having killed shall be put to death. 19 The one redeeming the blood, he, he shall kill the one having killed. In his meeting with him, he, he shall kill him. 20 And if in hatred he pushed him, or he threw upon him on purpose, and he died, 21 or in hostility he struck him with his hand, and he died, dying, the one having struck shall be put to death; he, is one having killed. The one redeeming the blood shall kill the one having killed in his meeting with him. 22 But if in suddenness, not in hostility, he pushed him, or he threw upon him any vessel not on purpose, 23 or with any stone, by which he dies, while not seeing, and he made fall upon him, and he died, and he, was not an enemy to him and, was not seeking his evil, 24 then the congregation shall judge between the one having struck and between the one redeeming the blood according to these ordinances. 25 And the congregation shall deliver the one having killed from the hand of the one redeeming the blood, and the congregation shall return him to the city of his refuge where he fled. And he shall dwell in it until the death of the great priest whom he anointed with the oil of the holy place. 26 But if going out, the one having killed goes out, beyond the border of the city of his refuge where he flees, 27 and the one redeeming the blood finds him from outside to the border of the city of his refuge, and the one redeeming the blood kills the one having killed, there is not to him blood. 28 For in the city of his refuge he shall dwell until the death of the great priest. And after the death of the great priest the one having killed shall return to the land of his possession.
29 And these shall be for you for a statute of judgment for your generations in all of your dwellings. 30 Everyone having struck a person, to the mouth of witnesses he shall kill the one having killed. And one witness shall not answer against a person to die. 31 And you shall not take a ransom for a life of one having killed, who is wicked to die, for dying, he shall be put to death. 32 And you shall not take a ransom to flee to the city of his refuge, to return to dwell in the land until the death of the priest. 33 And you shall not pollute the land in which you are, for the blood, it pollutes the land, and atonement for the land shall not be made for the blood that was poured out in it, except by the blood of the one pouring it out. 34 And you shall not make unclean the land in which you are dwelling, in the midst of which I am dwelling, for I, Yahweh, am dwelling in the midst of the sons of Israel.’ ”
