1 Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,[fn] to those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours in the righteousness of our {God}[fn] and Savior Jesus Christ:[fn]

2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of [God and of Jesus][fn] [[Christ]][fn] our Lord.

3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us {to}[fn] his own glory and virtue, 4 by which the precious and greatest promises have been given to us, so that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through desire.

5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.

10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent [[through good works]][fn] to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

12 Therefore I intend {always}[fn] to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.

19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For prophecy was never brought about by the will of men, but men, carried along by the Holy Spirit,[fn] spoke from God.

2 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2 Many will follow their {licentiousness},[fn] and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 In their greed, they will exploit you with fabricated words; for whom the judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but having cast them into Tartarus[fn] with chains of darkness, delivering them to be kept for judgment; 5 and if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, having reduced them to ashes, he condemned them [to destruction],[fn] Setting forth an example [of those who are to be][fn] of the ungodly. 7 And if he rescued righteous Lot, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard.)

9 The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation,[fn] but reserves the unrighteous for the day of judgment to be punished, 10 especially those who follow after the flesh in the desire of defilement and despise authority.

Bold and arrogant, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones. 11 Yet even angels, being greater in strength and power, do not bring a slanderous judgment against them [from the Lord].[fn]

12 But these people, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheme in matters they do not understand, in their destruction they will also be destroyed, 13 {suffering}[fn] harm as the wages of their wrongdoing. They consider it a pleasure to revel in the daytime, blots and blemishes, reveling in their {deceptions}[fn] while they feast with you; 14 having eyes [full][fn] of adultery and insatiable for sin, enticing unstable souls, having a heart trained in greed,[fn] cursed children.

15 Having left the straight path, they have gone astray, following the way of Balaam son of {Bosor},[fn] who loved the wages of unrighteousness. 16 But he received a rebuke for his own transgression; a mute beast, speaking with a human voice, restrained the prophet's madness.

17 These people are springs without water and {mists}[fn] driven by a storm, for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved [[forever]].[fn]

18 For, speaking with inflated vanity, they entice by fleshly desires, with debauchery, those who are truly escaping from those who live in error,

19 Promising them freedom, they themselves are [also][fn] slaves of corruption; for whatever someone is defeated by, to this they are enslaved.

20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing {the}[fn] Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.

21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.

22 [[But]][fn] Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A pig that is washed goes back to rolling in the mire.”[fn]

3 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you, in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 Remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets, and the commandment of {your}[fn] Lord and Savior given by your apostles.

3 Firstly, know this, that in the last days scoffers will come, walking according to their own desires in mockery 4 and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.

5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through {which}[fn] the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.

7 But the present heavens and earth, by the same word, are stored up for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.

9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward {you},[fn] not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief [[in the night]],[fn] in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will {be found}.[fn]

11 With all these things {thus}[fn] being dissolved what sort of men ought {you}[fn] to be in holy conduct and godliness? 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!

13 But according to his {promise}[fn] we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by him in peace, spotless and blameless, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.

17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

To him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. [Amen.][fn]
