Second Timothy

1Paul, an apostle of {Christ[fn] Jesus}[fn] by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus.

2To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day, 4longing to see you, remembering your tears, so that I may be filled with joy, 5{having been}[fn] reminded of the sincere faith that is in you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced is in you as well.

6For this reason, I remind you to rekindle the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control.

8Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me, his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, 9who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10but has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior {Christ Jesus},[fn] who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher [[of the Gentiles]],[fn] 12for which reason I also suffer these things.

But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that he is able to guard my deposit[fn] until that day.

13Hold the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14Guard the good deposit[fn] through the Holy Spirit[fn] in us.

15You know this, that all who are in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are {Phygelus}[fn] and Hermogenes. 16May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains, 17but when he arrived in Rome, he diligently searched for me and found me. 18May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day! And you know very well how much service he rendered in Ephesus.

2Therefore, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2and what you have heard from me through many witnesses, entrust these things to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

3[[You, therefore,]][fn] Endure hardship with me, as a good soldier of {Christ Jesus}.[fn] 4No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him.

5If indeed someone competes, they are not crowned unless they compete according to the rules. 6The hardworking farmer ought to be the first to receive a share of the crops. 7Understand what I am saying; {for}[fn] the Lord will give you insight in all things.

8Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, from the seed of David, according to my gospel, 9in which I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal, but the word of God is not bound.

10For this reason, I endure all things for the sake of the chosen ones, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

11This saying is trustworthy: For if we died together, we will also live together; 12if we endure, we will also reign together; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13if we are faithless, he remains faithful; [for][fn] he cannot deny[fn] himself.

14Remind them of these things, solemnly testifying before {God}[fn] not to quarrel about words, which is of no use and leads to the ruin of the hearers.

15Strive to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed worker, rightly dividing the word of truth.

16But avoid irreverent, empty speech, for this will lead to more and more ungodliness, 17and their words will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18who have deviated from the truth, saying [the][fn] resurrection has already occurred, and they are overturning the faith of some.

19However, the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his, and, Let everyone who names the name of {the Lord}[fn] depart from iniquity.”[fn]

20In a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also wooden and clay ones, and some are for honor, others for dishonor. 21Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, [[and]][fn] useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.

22But flee youthful desires, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace, along with {all} [fn] those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

23But avoid foolish and uneducated disputes, knowing that they generate strife.

24A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25correcting those who oppose him with gentleness, so that perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, 26and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

3But know this, that in the last days difficult times will come; 2for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of good, 4traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5having a form of godliness but denying its power; and avoid such people.

6For among them are those who creep into households and captivate weak women, burdened with sins, led away by various desires, 7always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind, disqualified concerning the faith. 9But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as theirs was.

10But you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me.

12And indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

13But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

14But you, remain in what you have learned and have become convinced of, knowing from whom you learned it, 15and that from infancy you have known, [the][fn] sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

16Every scripture is God-breathed[fn] and beneficial for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17so that the person of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

4I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and [[of the Lord]][fn] Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, {and by}[fn] his appearing and his kingdom: 2Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

3For there will be a time when they will not endure sound teaching, but according to their own desires, they will accumulate for themselves teachers, itching to hear something new. 4And indeed, they will turn away from hearing the truth, but will be diverted to myths.

5But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

6For I am already being poured out, and the time of my departure has come.

7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith;

8Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have loved his appearing.

9Do your best to come to me soon. 10For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. 11Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. 12Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.

13The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, when you come, bring it, and the books, especially the parchments.

14Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; {the Lord will}[fn] repay him according to his deeds. 15Beware of him yourself, for he {stood against}[fn] our message.

16In my first defense, no one {came to me},[fn] but all deserted me; may it not be counted against them.

17But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth.

18The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

19Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.

20Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus.

21Do your best to come before winter.

Eubulus sends greetings to you, as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.

22The Lord [[Jesus Christ]][fn] be with your spirit. Grace be with you. [[Amen]][fn]

[[To Timothy, second of the Ephesian church, first ordained bishop, was written from Rome when Paul appeared for the second time before Caesar Nero.]][fn]
