First Timothy

1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of {Christ[fn] Jesus}[fn] our hope, 2To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God {the}[fn] Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain in Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach different doctrine, 4nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which promote disputes rather than God's administration in faith.

5The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith. 6Some have swerved from these and have turned aside to fruitless discussion, 7desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

8We know, however, that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9knowing this, that the law is not laid down for the righteous, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their father and mother, for murderers of men, 10for the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, 11in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which was entrusted to me.

12I am grateful to the one who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy, putting me into service, 13even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

15The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - of whom I am the foremost. 16But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, {Christ Jesus}[fn] might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life.

17To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only {wise}[fn] God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

18This command I entrust to you, child Timothy, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, so that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they may be taught not to blaspheme.

2Therefore, I urge first of all that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and dignity.

3[[For]][fn] This is good and acceptable in the sight of our Savior God, 4who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony at the proper time.

7For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle - I am telling the truth [[in Christ]],[fn] I am not lying - a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

8Therefore, I desire that men pray in every place, lifting up holy hands without anger and argument.

9Likewise, [also][fn] women should adorn themselves in modest attire, with respect and self-control, not with braids {and}[fn] gold or pearls or expensive clothing, 10but with what is proper for women who profess godliness, through good works.

11A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.

12But I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man, but to be in quietness.

13For Adam was formed first, then Eve.

14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, being deceived, fell into transgression.

15But she will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

3The word is trustworthy. If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, they desire a noble task. 2Therefore, an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3not given to drunkenness, not violent, [[not greedy for gain]][fn] but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

4They must manage their own household well, with all dignity keeping their children submissive

5But if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for the church of God? 6Not a recent convert, lest they become conceited and fall into the condemnation of the devil.

7Moreover, one must also have a good reputation with those outside, so as not to fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil.

8Likewise, deacons should be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain, 9holding the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.

10And let these also first be tested, then let them serve, being without accusation.

11Likewise, women should be dignified, not slanderous, sober-minded, faithful in all things.

12Deacons must be husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.

13For those who have served well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

14I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you soon; 15but if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the house of God, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.

16And without a doubt, the mystery of godliness is great: {who}[fn] was revealed in the flesh, was justified in the spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the nations, was believed in the world, was taken up in glory.

4The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and teachings of demons, 2through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

4For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.

6If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of {Christ Jesus},[fn] being nourished in the words of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed; 7but the profane ones and silly myths,[fn] reject.

8For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

9The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance.

10For this reason we [[both]][fn] labor and {strive},[fn] because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the savior of all men, most of all, of the faithful.

11Command these things and teach them.

12Let no one despise you for your youth, but become an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, [[in spirit,]][fn] in faith, in purity.

13Until I come, pay attention to the reading, the exhortation, the teaching.

14Do not neglect the gift within you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the elders.

15Meditate on these things, immerse yourself in them, so that your progress may be evident to all.

16Pay attention to yourself and to the teaching; persist in it, for by doing this you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.

5Do not rebuke an older man, but encourage him as a father, younger men as brothers, 2older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

3Honor widows who are truly widows.

4But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is [[good and]][fn] acceptable in the sight of God.

5Now she who is truly a widow, and left alone, puts her hope in God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day, 6but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives.

7Prescribe these things as well, so that they may be {blameless}[fn] above reproach.

8But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

9Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one husband, 10having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.

11But refuse younger widows; for when they feel sensual desires in disregard of Christ,[fn] they want to marry 12and incur judgment because they have set aside their first faith;

13At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention.

14Therefore, I want younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach; 15for some have already turned aside to follow Satan.

16If any believing {woman}[fn] has relatives who are widows, let her assist them, and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are truly widows.

17Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching. 18For the scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.”[fn]

19Do not accept an accusation against an elder, except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.

20Rebuke those who sin in the presence of all, so that the rest may also have fear.

21I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and {Christ Jesus}[fn] and the chosen angels, that you keep these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality.

22Do not quickly lay hands on anyone, nor participate in others' sins; keep yourself pure.

23No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

24The sins of some men are clearly evident, leading to judgment, but for others, they appear later. 25In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and those [[that are]][fn] otherwise cannot be hidden.

6All who are under the yoke as slaves, let them consider their own masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be blasphemed. 2And those who have believing masters should not disrespect them because they are brothers, but rather they should serve them, because those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.

Teach and encourage these things. 3If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that is in accordance with godliness, 4he has become conceited, understanding nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.[fn] Withdraw from such people.”[fn]

6But there is great gain in godliness with contentment; 7for we brought nothing into the world, and [[it is clear]][fn] we cannot take anything out of it.

8But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.

9But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a trap and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

11But you, O man of God, flee from these things; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. 12Fight the good fight of faith, take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and you confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

13I charge [you] in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15which, at the proper time, the blessed and only Sovereign will show, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17Instruct those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on [[the living]][fn] God, to the one providing us with all things richly for enjoyment. 18They should do good, be rich in good works, be generous and ready to share, 19storing up for themselves a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that is {truly}[fn] life.

20O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you, turning away from the profane empty chatter and contradictions of falsely named knowledge, 21which some professing have missed the mark concerning the faith.

Grace be with you. [[Amen]][fn]
