Hebrews

1In many parts[fn] and in many ways, God long ago spoke to the fathers through the prophets. 2In these last days, he has spoken to us in a son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the ages;

3Who being the radiance[fn] of glory and the exact representation[fn] of his essence,[fn] upholding all things by the word of his power, having made purification for [[our]][fn] sins [[through himself]],[fn] he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

5For to which of the angels did he ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”?[fn]

And again, “I will be a Father to him, and he will be a Son to me”?[fn]

6And when he again brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “And let all the angels of God worship him.”[fn]

7And of the angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.”[fn]

8But of the Son, “Your throne, O God,[fn] is forever [and ever];[fn] [and][fn] the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of {your}[fn] kingdom. 9You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, your God, has anointed[fn] you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”[fn]

10And, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; 11they will perish, but you remain; and they will all grow old like a garment, 12And like a garment you will roll them up, and [[like a garment]][fn] they will be changed; but you are the same, and your years will never end.”[fn]

13And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?[fn]

14Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?

2For this reason, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away.

2For if the message spoken through angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just retribution, 3how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation, which began to be spoken through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard, 4with God bearing witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and distributions of the Holy Spirit according to his own will?

5For it is not to angels that he subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.

6But someone has testified somewhere, saying, “What is man that you remember him, or the son of man that you care for him? 7You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor, [[and you have set him over the works of your hands,]][fn] 8and subjected everything under his feet.”[fn]

For in subjecting [to him][fn] all things, he left nothing unsubjected to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him;

9But we do see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

10For it was fitting for him, for whom are all things and through whom are all things, having led many sons into glory, to perfect the pioneer of their salvation through sufferings. 11For both the one who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified all come from one.[fn] For this reason, he does not feel shame to call them brothers, 12saying, “I will declare your name to my brothers; in the midst of the assembly I will sing your praise.”[fn] 13And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children whom God has given me.”[fn]

14Therefore, since the children have shared in blood and flesh, he {also}[fn] likewise partook of the same, so that through death he might render powerless the one having the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and might set free these, as many as were subject to slavery all their lives by the fear of death.

16For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

17Therefore, it was necessary for him to become like the brothers in every way, so that he might become merciful and a faithful high priest in relation to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18For in that he himself has suffered being tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

3Therefore, holy brothers, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the apostle and high priest of our confession, {Jesus [[Christ]]},[fn][fn] 2being faithful to the one who made him, just as Moses also was in [all] his house.

3For this one has been deemed worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as the one who built the house has more honor than the house itself; 4for every house is built by someone, but God is the {builder of}[fn] everything.

5And Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken, 6but Christ,[fn] as a son over his house; of which we are the house, if indeed we hold fast to the confidence and the boast of hope [[until the end]].[fn]

7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, 8do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, 9where your fathers tested me by trial and saw my works 10for forty years. Therefore, I was provoked with {this}[fn] generation, and I said, ‘They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not known my ways.’ 11As I swore in my wrath, ‘They will not enter my rest.’”[fn]

12Be careful, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “Today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14For we have become partakers of Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”[fn]

16For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19And we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

4Therefore, let us fear, lest anyone of you should seem to have fallen short of the promise of entering into His rest, having been left behind.

2For we have been given the good news just as they were; but the word they heard did not benefit them, because it was not mixed with faith in those who heard.

3For we who have believed enter into [the][fn] rest, just as he has said, “As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter into my rest,’”[fn] although his works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4For somewhere it has said about the seventh day in this way, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works,”[fn] 5and in this again, “If they will enter into my rest.”[fn]

6Therefore, since it remains for some to enter into it, and those who were previously told the good news did not enter because of disobedience, 7again, a certain day is designated, “Today,” saying in David after so much time, as it has been [previously][fn] said, “Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”[fn]

8For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward about another day. 9So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

10For the one who has entered into his rest has also rested from his works, just as God did from his own.

11Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

12For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of [[both]][fn] soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

13And there is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid bare to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

14Therefore, having a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.

15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been {tempted}[fn] in every way, just as we are, yet without sin.

16Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

5For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed on behalf of men in matters pertaining to God, so that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins;

2He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also surrounded by weakness. 3And because of it he is obligated, just as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.

4And no one takes this honor for oneself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

5So also Christ did not glorify himself to become a high priest, but the one who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you.”[fn] 6As he also says in another place, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”[fn]

7In the days of his flesh, he offered up prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9And having been made perfect, he became the cause of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

11Concerning this, we have much to say and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull in understanding. 12For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, [and][fn] not solid food!

13For everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.

14But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

6Therefore, leaving the elementary teaching about Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2of instruction about baptisms, laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And this we will do, if God permits.

4For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance, crucifying for themselves the son of God and making a public spectacle.

7For the earth, which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and produces vegetation suitable for those for whom it is also cultivated, partakes of a blessing from God. 8But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, its end is to be burned.

9But we are convinced of better things concerning you, beloved, and things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. 10For God is not unjust to forget your work and the [[labor of]][fn] love which you have shown toward his name, having served the saints and continuing to serve.

11But we desire each of you to show the same diligence for the full assurance of hope until the end, 12so that you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

13For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself, 14saying, “Indeed, I will bless you and I will surely multiply you.”[fn]

15And thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

16For [[indeed]][fn] men swear by the greater, and for them an oath is the end of all dispute as a confirmation;

17In which God, desiring to show more abundantly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable nature of his purpose, interposed with an oath, 18so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

7For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all, first being translated as king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace,[fn] 3without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest perpetually.

4Now consider how great this one was, to whom [even][fn] the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the choicest spoils. 5And those indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priestly office have commandment in the Law to collect a tenth from the people, that is, from their brethren, although these are descended from the loins of Abraham; 6but the one whose genealogy is not traced from them collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed the one who had the promises. 7And without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater.

8In this case mortal men receive tithes, but there it is testified that he lives. 9And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, 10for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.

11Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron? 12For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there also takes place a change of law.

13For the one concerning whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar. 14For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe about which Moses said nothing concerning {priests}.[fn]

15And it is even more evident if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, 16who has become such not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life.

17For {it is attested}[fn] of him, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”[fn]

18For there is, indeed, a setting aside of the preceding commandment due to its weakness and uselessness - 19for the Law perfected nothing - but the introduction of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

20And inasmuch as it was not without an oath; for indeed, those have become priests without an oath, 21but this one with an oath through the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever [[after the order of Melchizedek]].’”[fn][fn] 22In this way [also],[fn] Jesus has become the surety of a superior covenant.

23And indeed, many have become priests, because death prevents them from continuing. 24But because he remains forever, the priesthood is unchangeable. 25Therefore, he is also able to save completely those who approach God through him, always living to intercede for them.

26For such a high priest was fitting for us, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners and having become higher than the heavens, 27who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for his own sins and then for the sins of the people; for this, he did by offering himself once for all.

28For the Law appoints men as high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a son, into the age completed.[fn]

8Now, concerning what has been said, we have such a high priest, who has taken a seat at the right hand of the throne of Majesty in the heavens, 2a minister of the holy things and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord set up, [[and]][fn] not man.

3For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices; therefore, it is necessary for this one also to have something to offer.

4If indeed he were on earth, he would not even be a priest, since there are {those}[fn] who offer the gifts according to the Law; 5who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was instructed when he was about to complete the tabernacle; for he says, “See that you make everything according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.”[fn]

6But now [he] has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.

7For if that first one had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second. 8For finding fault with them, he says, “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 9Not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, because they did not remain in my covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. 10For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 11And they will not teach, each one his citizen, and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know me, from {the least}[fn] to the greatest. 12For I will be merciful to their iniquities, and their sins [[and their lawlessness]][fn] I will remember no more.”[fn]

13In speaking of a new covenant, he has made the first one obsolete; and what is becoming obsolete and growing old is near to disappearing.

9So then [also][fn] the first [[tent]][fn] had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. 2For a tabernacle was prepared, the first one, in which were the lampstand and the table and the presentation of the loaves, which is called the Holy Place. 3And behind the second curtain, the tabernacle called the Holy of Holies, 4having a golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden jar holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. 5Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat; of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

6Now with these things prepared in this way, the priests continually enter the first tabernacle, performing their services, 7but into the second only the high priest enters once a year, not without blood, which he offers for himself and for the people's unintentional sins, 8the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the holy places had not yet been disclosed while the first tabernacle was still standing, 9which is a symbol for the present time, in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 10but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the flesh imposed until the time of reformation.

11But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things {that have come},[fn] through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation, 12he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the {eternal}[fn] Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify {our}[fn] conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

15And for this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. 16For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. 17For a covenant is valid only when people are dead, since it is never in force while the one who made it is alive. 18Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. 19For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of calves [and of goats],[fn] with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.”[fn] 21And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22Indeed, under the Law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

23Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27And just as it is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28so also[fn] Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

10For the Law, having a shadow of the good things to come, not the very image of the things, can never with the same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2For then would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins? 3But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.

4For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5Therefore, when entering into the world, it says, “You did not desire sacrifice and offering, but you prepared a body for me;[fn] 6You did not take pleasure in burnt offerings and sin offerings. 7Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come - in the volume of the book it is written of me - to do Your will, O God.’”[fn]

8Saying above, “You did not desire or take pleasure in sacrifices, offerings, burnt offerings, and sin offerings” (which are offered according to the Law), 9then he said, “Behold, I have come to do your will [[O God]].”[fn] He abolishes the first in order to establish the second, 10in which we are sanctified, those through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But {this one},[fn] having offered one sacrifice for sins, sat down at the right hand of God, 13waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.

14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

15And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after having {said}[fn] 16“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws upon their hearts and I will write them on their minds,” 17and, “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”[fn] 18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

19Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that he inaugurated for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our body washed with pure water.

23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to stir up one another unto love and to good works, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

26For if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a fearful expectation of judgment and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.

28If someone disregards the Law of Moses, they die without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which they were sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?

30For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay [[says the Lord]].”[fn] And again, “The Lord will judge his people.”[fn]

31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32But remember the former days, in which, after being enlightened, you endured a great struggle with sufferings, 33partly by being made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming partners with those who were so treated.

34For you sympathized with {those in prison}[fn] and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession [[in the heavens]].[fn] 35Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.

36For you have need of endurance, so that having done the will of God, you may receive the promise.

37For yet a little while, how very little, the one who is coming will come and will not delay; 38“But {my}[fn] righteous one will live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul takes no pleasure in them.”[fn] 39But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

11Now faith is the assurance[fn] of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2For by it the men of old gained approval.

3By faith we understand that the ages were prepared by the word of God, so that {what is seen}[fn] was not made out of things which are visible.

4By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he was attested to be righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through it, though he is dead, he still speaks.

5By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death, and he was not found because God took him up; for before [[his]][fn] being taken up, he was attested to have been pleasing to God.

6And without faith it is impossible to please him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

7By faith Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

8By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to {a}[fn] place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

9By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; 10for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

11By faith, Sarah herself, being barren, received power to conceive, and beyond the time of age, [[gave birth,]][fn] since she considered the one who had promised to be faithful. 12Therefore there were born even of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants as the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable {as}[fn] the sand which is by the seashore.[fn]

13By faith, these all died, not having received the promises, but from afar they saw them [[and were persuade]][fn] and greeted them, and confessed that they are strangers and sojourners on the earth. 14For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.

15And indeed if they had were remembering that from which they had departed, they would have had an opportunity to return. 16But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.

17By faith, Abraham offered up Isaac when he was tested, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten, 18to whom it was said, “In Isaac your offspring will be named,”[fn] 19considering that God is able to raise even from the dead, from which he also received him in a parable.

20[And][fn] By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, regarding things to come.

21By faith Jacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.[fn]

22By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel, and gave orders concerning his bones.

23By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king's edict.

24By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, 25choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward.

27By faith, he left Egypt, not fearing the king's wrath; for he endured as seeing the invisible one.

28By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that he who destroyed the firstborn would not touch them.

29By faith they passed through the Red Sea as though they were passing through dry land; and the Egyptians, when they attempted it, were drowned.

30By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.

31By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace.

32And what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, {Samson, Jephthah},[fn] of David and Samuel and the prophets, 33who through faith conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, 34quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, turned to flight foreign armies.

35Women received their dead by resurrection; others were tortured, not accepting release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection. 36And others experienced mockings and scourgings, and even chains and imprisonment.

37They were stoned, they were sawn in two [[they were tempted]],[fn] they died by the sword, they wandered about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated, 38of whom the world was not worthy, wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and the holes of the earth.

39And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive the promise, 40since God had foreseen something better for us, so that apart from us they would not be made perfect.

12Therefore, we also, having such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, having laid aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

4You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your struggle against sin.

5And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, or lose heart when he rebukes you, 6For whom the Lord loves, he disciplines, and he scourges every son whom he accepts.”[fn]

7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For {what}[fn] son is not disciplined by his father? 8But if you are without discipline (and everyone undergoes discipline) then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

9Then indeed, we had our earthly fathers as disciplinarians and we respected them; [but][fn] shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.

11Now, all discipline for the present does not seem to be of joy, but of sorrow; yet afterwards, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

12Therefore, lift up the drooping hands and the weakened knees, 13and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.[fn]

14Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord, 15watching that no one falls short of the grace of God, that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and through it many become defiled, 16that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17For you know that even afterwards, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it with tears.

18For you have not come to a touchable [[mountain]][fn] and burning fire, and darkness, and gloom, and storm, 19to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words, which those who heard begged that no further word be added to them, 20because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned [[or shot with an arrow]].”[fn][fn] 21The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “{I am trembling with fear}.”[fn][fn]

22But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, 24to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

25See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from the heavens, 26whose voice then shook the earth.

But now it has been promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.”[fn] 27But the phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken — that is, things that have been made — so that {what}[fn] cannot be shaken may remain.

28Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with {reverence and fear}.[fn]

29For indeed, our God is a consuming fire.[fn]

13Let brotherly love continue.

2Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels.

3Remember those who are in prison, as if you were bound with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.

4Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; {for}[fn] God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

5Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, “I will never leave you nor will I ever forsake you,”[fn] 6so that we may confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; [and][fn] I will not fear, what can man do to me?”[fn]

7Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you; considering the outcome of their way of life, imitate their faith.

8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and into the ages.

9Do not be carried away by various and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, in which those who walk have not benefited. 10We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat.

11For the blood of animals, which is brought for sin into the holy places by the high priest, their bodies are burned outside the camp.

12Therefore, Jesus also, in order to sanctify the people through his own blood, suffered outside the gate.

13Therefore, let us go out to him outside the camp, bearing his disgrace; 14for we do not have a city here that remains, but we are seeking the one to come.

15Through him [then][fn] let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name.

16Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have; for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

17Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account, so that they may do this with joy and not with groaning; for that would be unprofitable for you.

18Pray for us; for we {are persuaded}[fn] that we have a good conscience, desiring to conduct ourselves well in all things. 19I urge you more earnestly to do this, so that I may be restored to you sooner.

20Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, our Lord Jesus, 21may he equip you in every good {thing}[fn] to do his will, doing in {us}[fn] what is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory for the ages [of the ages],[fn] Amen.
