Galatians

1Paul, an apostle not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ[fn] and God the Father who raised him from the dead, 2and all the brothers with me, to the churches of Galatia:

3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and {the}[fn] Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave himself for our sins, so that he might deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5to whom is the glory forever and ever,[fn] amen.

6I am astonished that you are so quickly turning away from the one who called you in the grace [of Christ] to a different gospel, 7which is not another; except there are some who are troubling you and wanting to distort the gospel of Christ.

8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach [to you][fn] a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let them be under a curse. 9As we have said before, so now I say again: if anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let them be under a curse.

10For am I now seeking the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? [[For]][fn] if I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

11For I make known to you, brothers, the gospel that was preached by me, that it is not according to man; 12for I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

13For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it; 14And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

15But when it pleased [God,][fn] the one who set me apart from my mother's womb and called me through his grace, 16to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood, 17Nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away to Arabia and again returned to Damascus.

18Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit {Cephas}[fn] and stayed with him fifteen days. 19But I saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord's brother. 20What I am writing to you, behold, before God, I am not lying.

21Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. 22And I was still unknown by face to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. 23But they were only hearing that “The one who once persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” 24And they glorified God because of me.

2Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. 2But I went up according to a revelation, and I laid before them the gospel which I proclaim among the nations, but privately to those who are esteemed, lest somehow I run or had run in vain.

3But not even Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised; 4but because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy out our freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, {in order to}[fn] bring us into bondage, 5to whom we did not yield in submission even for an hour, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you.

6But from those who seemed to be something - whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism to people - for those who seemed important added nothing to me, 7but on the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel of the uncircumcision, just as Peter with the circumcision, 8for the one who worked in Peter for the apostleship of the circumcision also worked in me for the Gentiles, 9and when they recognized the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, those who seemed to be pillars, gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, that we should [[indeed]][fn] go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcision; 10only they asked us to remember the poor, which I also was eager to do.

11But when {Cephas}[fn] came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was condemned. 12For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those from the circumcision. 13And they played the hypocrite with him [and] the rest of the Jews, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. 14But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to {Cephas}[fn] in front of them all, “If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how do you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

15We are by nature Jews and not sinners from among the Gentiles; 16knowing [however] that a person is not justified by works of the law but {through faith in Jesus Christ},[fn] we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order that we might be {justified by faith in Christ}[fn] and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no flesh will be justified.

17But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves are found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18For if I rebuild what I have destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor.

19For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; 20and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God,[fn] who loved me and gave himself for me.

21I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.

3O foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you [[that you should not obey the truth]],[fn] before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified [[among you]]?[fn] 2This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3Are you so foolish? Having begun with the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?

5So then, the one supplying the Spirit to you and working miracles among you, is it from works of the law or from hearing with faith? 6Just as Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.[fn]

7Therefore, know that those of faith, these are sons of Abraham.

8But the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the nations by faith, announced the good news beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you all the nations will be blessed.”[fn] 9So then, those who are of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

10For as many as are of works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not abide {by}[fn] all things written in the book of the law, to do them.”[fn] 11Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”[fn] 12But the law is not of faith; rather, “The {one}[fn] who does these things will live by them.”[fn]

13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,”[fn] 14in order that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

15Brothers, I speak in human terms: even a human covenant, once ratified, no one sets aside or adds to it. 16But to Abraham were the promises spoken and to his seed.[fn] It does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but as referring to one, “And to your seed,” who is Christ.[fn]

17This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God [[in Christ]],[fn] so as to make the promise void. 18For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God granted it to Abraham by a promise.

19Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator. 20Now a mediator is not for one party alone, but God is one.

21Is the law then contrary to the promises [of God]?[fn] Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22But the Scripture has confined all things under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23But before faith arrived, we were guarded under the law, confined to the faith that was about to be disclosed. 24So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.

26For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.[fn]

27For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, heirs according to the promise.

4I say, for as long a time as the heir is an infant, he is no different from a slave, though being lord of all, 2but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father.

3In the same way, when we were infants, we were enslaved under the basic principles of the world; 4But when the fullness of time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5In order to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive the adoption as sons.

6And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into {our}[fn] hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!” 7So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an {heir through God}.[fn]

8But at that time, not knowing God, you served those who by nature are not gods; 9But now, having come to know God, or rather, being known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and poor elements, to which you want to be enslaved once more?

10You observe days and months and seasons and years. 11I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.

12Become as I am, because I also am as you are, brothers, I beg of you. You have not wronged me; 13But you know that because of a weakness of the flesh I preached the gospel to you the first time, 14And you did not despise or reject the trial in my flesh, but you received me as an angel[fn] of God, as if I were Christ Jesus.

15{Where then is}[fn] your blessedness? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me. 16Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth?

17They are zealous for you, but not in a good way; they want to exclude you, so that you may be zealous for them.

18But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you. 19My [[children]],[fn] for whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you; 20And I would like to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.

21Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and one by the free woman. 23But the son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, while the son by the free woman was born through [[the]][fn] promise.

24Which things are allegorized; for these are two covenants, one indeed from Mount Sinai, giving birth to slavery, which is Hagar. 25Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26But the Jerusalem above is free, which is {our mother};[fn]

27For it is written, “Rejoice, barren one who does not give birth; break forth and cry out, you who do not travail; because many are the children of the desolate, more than of her who has the husband.”[fn]

28Now {you},[fn] brothers, like Isaac, are children of the promise. 29But just as at that time the one born according to the flesh persecuted the one according to the Spirit, so also now. 30But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son; for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.”[fn]

31Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.

5For freedom, Christ set us free; therefore, stand firm {and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.}[fn]

2Behold, I, Paul, say to you that if you are circumcised, Christ will not benefit you at all.

3I testify again to every man who receives circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law.

4You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by the law; you have fallen from grace.

5For we, through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness.

6For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.

7You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8This persuasion is not from the one who calls you. 9A little leaven leavens the whole lump.

10I have confidence in you in the Lord that you will take no other view, and the one who is troubling you will bear the judgment, whoever he may be.

11But if I, brothers, still preach circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case, the offense of the cross has been removed.

12I wish those who unsettle you would even cut themselves off.

13For you were called to freedom, brothers; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14For the whole law {is}[fn] fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

15But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

16But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

17For the flesh desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19Now the works of the flesh are evident: [[adultery]][fn] sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21envies, [[murders]],[fn] drunkenness, carousing,[fn] and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

24And those who belong to Christ [Jesus][fn] have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

25If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

26Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

6Brothers, if a person is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, watching yourself so that you too may not be tempted.

2Carry one another's burdens, and {you will fulfill}[fn] the law of Christ. 3For if someone thinks [[himself]][fn] to be something, being nothing, they deceive themselves.

4But let each one examine their own work, and then their reason for boasting will be in themselves alone and not in another; 5for each will bear their own load.

6Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. 7Do not be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a person sows, this they will also reap; 8because the one sowing to their own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one sowing to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.

9And let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not give up. 10So then, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those of the household of faith.

11See with what large letters I have written to you with my own hand. 12Those who want to make a good impression in the flesh, these are the ones who compel you to be circumcised, only so that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.

13For even those who {are}[fn] circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh. 14But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

15For [[in Christ Jesus]][fn] neither circumcision is anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. 16And as many as will walk by this rule, peace be upon them and mercy, and[fn] upon the Israel of God.

17From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear the marks of [[the Lord]][fn] Jesus on my body.

18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.
