ἀνάγω

Strong’s: G321

Associated OET lemmas: ἀνάγω

Other spellings: ἀνάγομαι

Notes: One may assume from the use of ἀνάγω in RV ACT 12:4 · LV ACT 12:4 · Read together ACT 12:4 that the prison was probably an underground prison, and Peter would then be led up to a courtroom which would be higher than the prison.; Though the Greek term ἀνάγω means literally ‘to lead up’ (see ἀνάγω[a] 15.176: ἀνάγω / 15.176: ἀναφέρω), it is not necessary in translating to always introduce the element of height or to translate it by some expression meaning ‘up.’ In ancient temples the idol or god was often on an elevated platform, and so one can readily understand how a term meaning ‘to bring up’ or ‘to carry up’ could readily acquire the meaning of ‘to carry up to’ or ‘to present to.’

Sense 3: to set sail, to put out to sea

Semantic entry: 54.4

Semantic domains: Maritime Activities

Definition: to begin to go by boat

Notes: In some languages a distinction is made in putting out to sea based upon whether the boat goes out from a beach and thus passes through waves or whether it goes out to sea from a harbor. In the various contexts of the book of Acts it is preferable to use a term which implies a harbor, while in contexts which speak of the Sea of Galilee, movement would normally be from a beach (see 54.5: ἐπανάγω).
