4.1 Tunc Jesus. Post baptismum, quia nulla est mora a tentatione: Ut mox doceat baptizatos de mundo exire, in quiete Deo vacare: sic filii Isræl post transitum maris per desertum ascendunt, et manna comedunt donec veniant ad terram promissionis. Tunc Jesus ductus est, etc. RAB. Ut tentaretur a diabolo. Non tentatur a diabolo, nisi quia ad desertum exierit, id est, bono studere cœperit.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:1 Jesus was led by the Spirit: The temptation was providentially arranged by God as a test of the Messiah’s character (see Deut 8:2).
• to be tempted there by the devil: This test of character, initiated by God (who tempts no one; see Jas 1:13-14), was accomplished through the devil’s own desire to lure Jesus into sin.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

τότε

then

Here, the word Then introduces the next major event in the story. It does not indicate how soon this event happened after the events that Matthew has already narrated. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces the next event in sequence. Alternate translation: “Sometime after that,” or “After he heard the voice from the heavens,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνήχθη & ὑπὸ τοῦ Πνεύματος

¬the Jesus /was/_brought_up & by the Spirit

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “the Spirit led up Jesus”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

πειρασθῆναι ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου

/to_be/_tempted by the devil

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “so that the devil could tempt Jesus”
