UST NUM Chapter 36

36Now there was a tribal group that was one of the tribal groups that descended from Joseph. Specifically, this tribal group descended from Gilead, whose father was Machir, whose father was Manasseh. The men who led the extended families that made up this tribal group approached Moses and the men who led the Israelite ancestral families and talked with them. 2They said, “Yahweh told you, sir, to use lots to determine randomly where each of the Israelite tribal groups will receive its land. Yahweh also told you, sir, to assign the land that our relative Zelophehad would have received to his daughters. 3However, suppose that they marry men from other Israelite tribes. In that case, the land that they received will belong to the tribe of the men whom they married. It will no longer belong to our tribe. In this way, we will lose some of the land that our tribal group received. 4Also, when it is the year for restoring for the Israelite people, the land that they received will still belong to the tribe of the men whom they married. in this way, we will lose some of the land that belongs to our ancestral tribe.”

5Then Moses told the Israelite people what Yahweh commanded him to say. He said, “The men who lead this tribe that descends from Joseph have said this correctly. 6Here is what Yahweh has ordered Zelophehad’s daughters to do. They may marry anyone they like, as long as the man belongs to a tribal group within the same tribe as their father. 7Land that belongs to one tribe must never transfer to another tribe. Each Israelite must ensure that the land that he or she receives continues to belong to his or her ancestral tribe. 8Every Israelite woman who receives land from her father must marry a man who belongs to a tribal group within the same tribe as her father. That way, each Israelite will ensure that his or her ancestral land continues to belong to him or her. 9Land that belongs to one tribe must never transfer to another tribe. Each Israelite must ensure that the land that he or she receives continues to belong to his or her ancestral tribe.”

10Zelophehad’s daughters did exactly what Yahweh told Moses to do. 11Zelophehad’s daughters were Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah. They married the sons of their father’s brothers. 12They married men who belonged to the tribal groups that descended from Manasseh, whose father was Joseph. So, the land that they received continued to belong to the tribe to which their father’s tribal group belonged.

13Those are the rules and instructions that Yahweh gave to the Israelites through Moses while they were in the flatlands that were part of Moab, on the east side of the Jordan River, across from Jericho.
