UST NUM Chapter 8

8Yahweh told Moses, 2“Tell Aaron that, when he puts the seven lamps in their places on the lampstand, he must make sure that they light up the area in front of the lampstand.” 3When Moses told that to Aaron, Aaron did it exactly as Yahweh had said. He put the lamps in their places on the lampstand so that they lit up the area in front of the lampstand. 4The people who made the lampstand had made it look exactly like what Yahweh had shown to Moses. They had made it, including its main shaft and the flower decorations on it, by hammering a single sheet of gold. 5Yahweh told Moses, 6“Out of all the Israelites, appoint the Levites to serve me. You must make them pure. 7Here is how to make them pure. You must flick some purifying water on them. You must have them shave off their hair completely. You must have them wash their clothes. That is how they will make themselves pure. 8They must select a young bull and prepare grain offering that goes with it, which is flour with olive oil in it. You must select another young bull to be a purifying sacrifice. 9Then you must have the Levites stand at the front of the sacred tent. You must summon the rest of the Israelite community to the sacred tent. 10You must offer the Levites in my presence, and the leaders of the Israelites must place their hands on them. 11From all the Israelites, Aaron must set the Levites apart in my presence, as if he were holding them up as an offering. Then, the Levites must do the work that I require. 12Then the Levites must place their hands on bulls’ heads. You must have a priest offer one bull as a purifying sacrifice and the other bull as a wholly burned sacrifice in order to remove their sins and ransom them. 13You must have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons. Then, you must set the Levites apart for me, as if you were holding them up as an offering. 14That is how you must set the Levites apart from the rest of the Israelites. Then, Levites will belong to me. 15Once you have made them pure and set them apart, as if you were holding them up as an offering, then the Levites can set up and take down the sacred tent whenever the Israelites travel. 16You must set the Levites apart because out of all the Israelites, I have assigned the Levites exclusively to me. They belong to me in place of the oldest male from every Israelite family. 17That is because the oldest male from every Israelite family and the oldest male offspring of all their farm animals belong to me. When I killed the oldest male from every Egyptian family in Egypt, I set the oldest male from every Israelite family apart for myself. 18But now I have chosen the Levites in place of the oldest male from every Israelite family. 19Out of all the Israelites, I have assigned the Levites to serve Aaron and his sons. They will set up and take down the sacred tent for the Israelites, and they will ransom the Israelites. That way, when the Israelites approach the sacred tent, bad things will not happen to them.” 20Moses, Aaron, and the rest of the Israelite community did exactly what Yahweh told Moses to do with the Levites. 21The Levites washed their clothes and purified themselves. Aaron set them apart in Yahweh’s presence, as if he were holding them up as an offering. Aaron offered a sacrifice that Yahweh accepted to remove their sins, and so they were pure. 22Once that was done, the Levites were able to set up and take down the sacred tent whenever the Israelites travel. Aaron and his sons would supervise them as they did that. So, the Israelites did exactly what Yahweh told Moses to do with the Levites. 23Yahweh told Moses, 24“Here are instructions for the Levites. The Levite men who are at least 30 years old are able to work at the sacred tent and set it up and take it down. 25The Levite men who are at least 50 years old are no longer able to set up and take down the sacred tent. They must not do that anymore. 26They can help their fellow Levites at the tent of meeting by guarding the sacred tent and its equipment. However, they cannot set up and take down the sacred tent. That is what you must have the Levites do as they guard the sacred tent and its equipment.”
