UST NUM Chapter 13

13Yahweh told Moses, 2“Have some men go to Canaan and scout it out. That is the land that I will give to you Israelites. Select one man for each ancestral tribe. Each one must be someone who helps lead his tribe.” 3So Moses selected twelve men, each of whom was someone who helped lead the Israelites. He had them go to Canaan from where they had set up their tents in the desolate area near the city of Paran, just as Yahweh commanded him to do. 4Here are the names of the men and their tribes: Zaccur’s son Shammua, from Reuben tribe; 5Hori’s son Shaphat, from Simeon tribe; 6Jephunneh’s son Caleb, from Judah tribe; 7Joseph’s son Igal, from Issachar tribe; 8Nun’s son Hoshea, from Ephraim tribe; 9Raphu’s son Palti, from Benjamin tribe; 10Sodi’s son Gaddiel, from Zebulun tribe; 11Susi’s son Gaddi, from Manasseh tribe, which descends from Joseph; 12Gemalli’s son Ammiel, from Dan tribe; 13Michael’s son Sethur, from Asher tribe; 14Vophsi’s son Nahbi, from Naphtali tribe; 15and Maki’s son Geuel, from Gad tribe. 16Moses had those men go and scout Canaan out. Also, Moses had given Nun’s son Hoshea the name Joshua. 17When Moses had them go to Canaan and scout it out, he told them, “Walk directly ahead of you through the Negev. Then, walk into the hilly area north of it. 18Pay attention to what the area is like. Pay attention to the people who live there. Find out if they are powerful or not. Find out if there are many of them or only a few. 19Pay attention to the area where they live. Find out if it is desirable or not. Pay attention to the places where they live. Find out if they live in cities with or without walls. 20Pay attention to the soil. Find out if it is fertile or not. Find out if trees grow there or not. Do your best to bring back some fruit that grows there.” He said that because it was time when the first grapes became ripe. 21So those men walked to Canaan and scouted it out. They did so from the desolate area of Zin in the south to the city of Rehob, which is near the city of Lebo Hamath in the north. 22When they left the Israelites, they walked through the Negev and arrived at the city of Hebron. People had constructed Hebron seven years before people constructed the city of Zoan, which is in Egypt. Some of the Anak people group lived near Hebron. Their names were Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai. 23Near Eshkol Stream Bed, they chopped a branch from a grapevine that had a large group of grapes on it. They attached it to a pole so that two of them could carry it. They also collected some pomegranates and figs. 24They named that place Eshkol Stream Bed because there the Israelites chopped off a branch that had a large group of grapes on it. The word Eshkol means “a group of grapes.” 25When they had finished scouting Canaan out, they came back to the rest of the Israelites. They had been gone for 40 days. 26When they arrived where the Israelites were at the city of Kadesh in the desolate area near the city of Paran, they met with Aaron, Moses, and the rest of the Israelite community. Then the leaders who had scouted Canaan out told Aaron, Moses, and the rest of the Israelite community what they had learned, and they showed them the grapes, pomegranates, and figs that they had gathered. 27Then they told Moses in front of everyone, “We walked to the place where you told us to go. It certainly is a very fertile place! Here is the fruit it produces. 28But the people who live there are powerful. Their cities have large walls. Also, some of the Anak people group live there. 29The Amalekite people group lives in the Negev. The Hittite people group, the Jebusite people group, and the Amorite people group live in the hilly area. The Canaanite people group lives near the Mediterranean Sea and near the Jordan River.” 30Caleb told the people who were in front of Moses to be quiet. Then he said, “We can definitely conquer Canaan! So, we should certainly walk there and take the area for ourselves.” 31However, the others who had walked to Canaan with him said, “No, the people who live there are more powerful than we are. We cannot conquer them.” 32Then those men told the Israelites bad things about Canaan, the area they had scouted out. They said, “The area that we scouted out is very bad for those who live there. Also, every person we saw there was very tall. 33We even saw Nephils there. We felt like little bugs in comparison with them, and that is how they thought of us too.” They mentioned Nephils because the descendants of Anak are Nephils.
