γραφή

Strong’s: G1124

Associated OET lemmas: γραφή

Other spellings: γραφαί

Notes: γραφή[a] in 33.10: γραφή / 33.10: περιοχή / 33.10: τόπος differs significantly in meaning from γραφή[b] (33.53: γραφή) in that the latter denotes specifically some OT Scripture passage, while γραφή[a] is a more generic reference to any unit of discourse, though in RV LUK 4:21 · LV LUK 4:21 · Read together LUK 4:21 it happens to refer to an OT section.; For γραφή in the more generic sense, see 33.10: γραφή / 33.10: περιοχή / 33.10: τόπος and footnote.

Sense 3: the Scriptures, the holy writings

Semantic entry: 33.54

Semantic domains: Communication

Subdomains: Written Language

Definition: (pl; ῶν f) the sacred writings of the OT

Notes: Some translators have mistakenly attempted to use the rendering ‘Bible’ when translating αἱ γραφαί ‘the Scriptures’ in the NT. The reference is to the OT and not to the entire Bible, including both New and Old Testaments. It is also a mistake to translate αἱ γραφαί as ‘God’s writings,’ for this would give the impression that God himself wrote the words.
