The celebration in shelters

Neh 8:13–18

13The next day, all the clan leaders, and the priests and Levites, met with Ezra the scribe to study the instructions on the scroll. 14They discovered that it was written in the instructions that Yahweh had given through Mosheh, that the Israelis should live in temporary shelters during the celebration in their seventh month (our September-October).[ref] 15They should publicly proclaim in Yerushalem and in all their towns that the people should go into the hills and bring back branches from olive or wild olive trees, myrtle or palm trees, and/or other leafy trees to make shelters as it’s written.

16So the people went out and brought back branches to make shelters for themselves on their roofs or in their courtyards, or in the temple courtyard or in the plazas near the Water Gate and the Efrayim Gate. 17Then the whole assembly of people who’d come back from captivity made shelters and lived in them for one week. The Israelis hadn’t done that since the time of Yehoshua’s leadership, and they did it with a lot of celebration. 18Ezra read aloud from the scroll of God’s instructions each day of the seven days of celebration, then on the eighth day they all gathered together as per the instructions.

Lev 23:33-36,39-43:

33Then Yahweh told Mosheh:[ref]

34Tell the Israelis that starting on the 15th of the seventh month (of Tishrei—around September/October), there will be a celebration in shelters to honour Yahweh. 35The first day will be a sacred assembly—you all mustn’t do any regular work. 36You all must present a gift to Yahweh each day for seven days, and then on the eighth day, there’ll be another sacred assembly and you’ll all present a gift to Yahweh. It’ll be a day to assemble—you all mustn’t do any regular work that day.

39So indeed, on the 15th of the seventh month when you have harvested your crops, you’ll all celebrate Yahweh’s festival for seven days with the first and eighth days being rest days. 40On that first day, you’ll all bring the fruit from your trees, along with palm branches, leafy branches, and willow branches from beside the creeks, and you’ll all happily celebrate in front of your god Yahweh for seven days. 41Do that for seven days each year as a festival to honour Yahweh. you all must celebrate it in the seventh month. That’s a permanent rule that will continue throughout the generations. 42You all must live in shelters for seven days—all you native-born Israelis, 43so that the future generations will know that I made their ancestors live in shelters when I brought them out of Egypt (Heb. Mitsrayim). I am your god Yahweh.

23:33-36: Deu 16:13-15.

Deu 16:13-15:

13After you’ve brought in the grain harvest and pressed out the grape juice, you must celebrate the ‘Festival of Shelters’ for seven days.[ref] 14You should celebrate along with your children and your servants, as well as any Levites and foreigners and orphans and widows who live in your town. 15Honour your god Yahweh at the place he’ll choose, by celebrating for seven days because he’s blessed your harvest and all your other work.
