6 Therefore, leaving the elementary teaching about Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of instruction about baptisms, laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do, if God permits.
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance, crucifying for themselves the son of God and making a public spectacle.
7 For the earth, which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and produces vegetation suitable for those for whom it is also cultivated, partakes of a blessing from God. 8 But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, its end is to be burned.
9 But we are convinced of better things concerning you, beloved, and things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. 10 For God is not unjust to forget your work and the [[labor of]][fn] love which you have shown toward his name, having served the saints and continuing to serve.
11 But we desire each of you to show the same diligence for the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “Indeed, I will bless you and I will surely multiply you.”[fn]
15 And thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
16 For [[indeed]][fn] men swear by the greater, and for them an oath is the end of all dispute as a confirmation;
17 In which God, desiring to show more abundantly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable nature of his purpose, interposed with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
