[Therefore][fn] I exhort {the elders among you},[fn] as {fellow elder and witness}[fn] of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker of the glory that is to be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God among you, [overseeing][fn] not by compulsion but willingly [according to God];[fn] not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not as domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
Likewise, you younger men, submit yourselves to the elders.
And all of you, [[submit to one another,]][fn] clothe yourselves with humility; for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.[fn]
Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Be sober-minded, be watchful. [[Because]][fn] Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking {someone to}[fn] devour.
Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called {you}[fn] to his eternal glory in Christ [[Jesus]],[fn] he will perfect, establish, {strengthen, and lay the foundation}.[fn]
To him be [[the glory and]][fn] the dominion forever [and ever].[fn] Amen.
Through Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand.
{She who is}[fn] in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son.
Greet one another with {a kiss of love}.[fn]
[Peace to all of you who are in Christ][fn] [[Jesus. Amen]].[fn]
