Likewise, wives, being submissive to your own husbands, so that [even][fn] if some are disobedient to the word, they may be won over without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2observing your pure conduct in reverence. 3Let your adornment not be the external braiding of hair and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes, 4but the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.

For in this way, in former times, the holy women who hoped in God also adorned themselves, submitting to their own husbands, 6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children by doing good and not fearing any intimidation.

Husbands, likewise, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker vessel, the female, giving honor as co-heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

Finally, all of you, be like-minded, sympathetic, brotherly, tender-hearted, {humble-minded},[fn] 9not repaying evil for evil or insult for insult, but on the contrary, blessing, [[knowing]][fn] for to this you were called, that you might inherit a blessing.

For whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; 11[[but]][fn] let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. 12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.[fn]

And who is there to harm you if you are {zealous}[fn] for what is good? 14But even if you should suffer for righteousness sake, you are blessed. Do not fear their intimidation, [nor be troubled],[fn] 15but sanctify {Christ}[fn] as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you, 16but with gentleness and reverence, having a good conscience, so that in what they slander [[you as evildoers]],[fn] those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. 17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if it is God's will, than for doing evil.

For Christ [also][fn] {suffered}[fn] once for [[our]][fn] sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring {you}[fn] to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit; 19in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20who formerly did not obey, when [[once]][fn] God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.

This also, as an antitype,[fn] now saves {you},[fn] baptism, not a removal of the filth of the flesh, but an appeal for a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
