1:11 Otniel captures Devir

(Josh. 15:13-19)

11 From there they fought against Kiryat -Sefer (now known as Devir). 12 Kalev (Caleb) had said, “The one who attacks Kiryat -Sefer and captures it can marry my daughter Aksah.” 13 Otniel (son of Kalev’s younger brother Kenaz) captured it so Kalev gave his daughter Aksah to him to become his wife. 14 After the wedding, she urged Otniel to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Kalev asked her, “What can I do for you?” 15 “Give me a blessing,” she requested. “Although you’ve given me land in the southern wilderness, give me some springs of water as well.” So Kalev gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

13 Yahweh had instructed Yehoshua (Joshua) to give this block of land to Kalev (Caleb) (Yefuneh’s son): Kiryat -Arba (now called Hevron—Arba was Anak’s father).[ref] 14 Kalev captured the land from Anak’s three sons—Sheshay, Ahiman, and Talmay, 15 then from there, he battled against Devir (formerly called Kiryat-Sefer) 16 ⇔and he said, “I’ll give my daughter Aksah to marry to the man who attacks Kiryat-Sefer and captures it.” 17 Then Otniel (Kenaz’s son and Kalev’s brother) captured the city, so Kalev gave his daughter Aksah to him for a wife. 18 Then when she married him, she encouraged him to ask her father for a field, so she got down off her donkey and Kalev asked, “What are you up to?” 19 “Give me a blessing,” she answered, “because you’ve given me land in the Negev desert region, so now give me some springs as well for water.” So he gave her both the upper and the lower springs.
