Who is the greatest?

Mat 18:1–9

Mark 9:33–37

Luke 9:46–48

Luke 17:1–2

18:1 Who is the greatest?

(Mark 9:33-37, Luke 9:46-48)

18[ref]Around that time his apprentices approached Yeshua and asked him, “So who will be the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens?”

2Yeshua called in a small child and stood the child in the middle of the room 3[ref]and said, “I can assure you all that if you don’t turn and become like a small child, you all certainly won’t enter the kingdom of the heavens, 4so anyone who humbles themself like this small child is greater in the kingdom of the heavens. 5Anyone who receives a small child like this in my name, is receiving me,

6But anyone who causes one of these small ones who believe in me to stumble, it would have been better for that person if a heavy stone had been hung around their neck and if they’d been sunk in the deep lake. 7The world suffers due to temptations, because it’s necessary for temptations to come, but it won’t be good for the person who brings the temptation.

8[ref]If your hand or foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away because it’s better for you to enter eternal life maimed or lame than to be thrown into the eternal fire with two hands and feet. 9[ref]Also if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away because it’s better for you to enter eternal life with only one eye than to be thrown into the pit of fire with two eyes.

9:33 How to be the best

(Mat. 18:1-5, Luke 9:46-48)

33Then they went Capernaum and when they arrived at the house, Yeshua asked them what they were discussing on the way.

34[ref]But they didn’t reply because while they were walking, they had been talking about which of them is the best. 35[ref]So Yeshua sat down and called the twelve of them and explained, “Anyone who wants to be at the top, has to be at the bottom and help all the others. 36Then Yeshua called a young boy and stood him in the middle of them, and giving him a hug said, 37[ref]Whoever welcomes young children on my behalf, welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me is not actually welcoming me, but welcoming the one who sent me here.

9:46 Who is the greatest?

(Mark 9:33-37, Mat. 18:1-5)

46[ref]Then the apprentices got themselves into a discussion about which of them might hopefully be considered the greatest. 47But Yeshua knew what was going on, so he took a young child and stood the child there next to him 48[ref]and told them, “Anyone who accepts a young child in my name is accepting me, and anyone who accepts me is accepted by the one who sent me here. Because it’s the person who is the least among you who’s at the top.

17:1 Forgiving sin

(Mark 9:42, Mat. 18:6-7)

17Then Yeshua told his followers, “It’s impossible that temptations will disappear, but a bad future awaits whoever brings them. 2If would be better if that person had a heavy weight tied to them and got thrown into the sea than if they cause a younger one to stumble.
