25David and his military officers chose some of the descendants of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun to lead worship music at the temple with harps, lyres, and cymbals. Here is a list of the men whom they chose for that work.

4From Heman’s family, they chose his sons Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth. 5Those were all sons of Heman, who was King David’s prophet. God had promised that he would honor Heman, and he enabled him to have fourteen sons and three daughters.

6The fathers of all these men directed them as they performed music in Yahweh’s temple. They played cymbals, harps, and lyres as their work in the temple. The king supervised their fathers Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman. 7Those men and their relatives could play musical instruments skillfully, and they learned the music for the temple songs. There were 288 of those men. 8David and his officers cast lots to determine what work each group of Levites would do. Men who were more important or who had more experience did not receive favorable treatment compared with men who were less important or who had less experience.

9The first lot selected Joseph and his sons and relatives from the family of Asaph—12 men in all. The second lot selected Gedaliah and his sons and relatives—12 men in all.

13The sixth lot selected Bukkiah and his sons and relatives—12 men in all.

17The tenth lot selected Shimei and his sons and relatives—12 men in all.

21The fourteenth lot selected Mattithiah and his sons and relatives—12 men in all.

25The eighteenth lot selected Hanani and his sons and relatives—12 men in all.

29The twenty-second lot selected Giddalti and his sons and relatives—12 men in all.
